Reliable Perimeter Drainage for Type C Waterproofing Systems

Wykamol Waterguard Perimeter Drainage Channel is a purpose-designed solution for managing water ingress in below-ground environments, forming a critical part of a fully compliant Type C cavity drain waterproofing system. Developed specifically for use in basements and cellars, the channel is laid flat and level around the internal perimeter of the floor slab, where it intercepts and redirects moisture migrating through retaining walls and behind cavity drain membranes. This intelligent drainage system ensures the effective channelling of water towards a sump and pump system or natural drainage point, maintaining dry and habitable internal spaces.

Strategic Water Control at Key Structural Junctions

Engineered for optimal performance, the Waterguard Channel is installed at the junction between walls and floors—areas most prone to water ingress in subterranean structures. As water enters through the structure and collects behind the cavity membrane, it flows through pre-drilled drainage holes in the channel, which direct it efficiently to the designated evacuation point. Unlike traditional systems that rely on gradient, Wykamol Waterguard operates without a fall, enabling consistent water management along the entire perimeter without the need for complex slope calculations or levelling.

Durable Construction for Demanding Environments

Manufactured from rigid, high-quality PVC, the Waterguard Channel is built to withstand the harsh and persistent damp conditions typically encountered in basement applications. Its robust design resists warping, crushing, or deterioration over time, ensuring long-term functionality. This makes it ideal for both new-build developments and refurbishment projects requiring dependable, concealed water management systems.

Designed for Seamless Integration and Maintenance

The system has been designed with practicality in mind, offering straightforward compatibility with a full range of ancillary components, including corners, connectors, and jetting eyes. These additions allow for comprehensive detailing around internal and external corners, while also providing access points for periodic maintenance and jetting, ensuring that the system remains free-flowing and effective for years to come.

Compliant with BS 8102:2009 for Complete Peace of Mind

As a key component of a Type C waterproofing system, Wykamol Waterguard fully supports compliance with BS 8102:2009—the British Standard for the protection of structures against water ingress. Its ability to collect and direct water discreetly and efficiently ensures that cavity drain membrane systems function as intended, safeguarding buildings against the risk of damp, mould, and structural deterioration.

Essential for Long-Term Basement Waterproofing

Whether part of a new development or a retrofit waterproofing upgrade, the Wykamol Waterguard Perimeter Drainage Channel offers essential functionality in environments exposed to hydrostatic pressure. Its integration into a wider cavity drainage strategy not only improves moisture control but also extends the service life of internal finishes and structural elements, providing a trusted solution for long-term basement protection.

Product Benefits

  • Pre-Drilled Drainage Holes: Strategically positioned holes allow water to enter the channel directly from behind the cavity membrane, ensuring rapid collection and redirection of moisture at the wall/floor junction.

  • Tough and Durable Construction: Manufactured from high-grade PVC, the Waterguard Channel provides long-term resilience and resistance to deformation or damage under the pressures of below-ground environments.

  • Easy to Install: Lightweight yet sturdy, this perimeter channel can be quickly and easily fitted by hand, requiring minimal specialist tools. Compatible ancillary products simplify installation around corners and junctions.

  • Part of an Integrated System: Fully compatible with Wykamol Cavity Drain Membranes and pump systems, Waterguard forms part of a complete Type C waterproofing solution that complies with BS 8102:2009.

  • Flat-Level Installation: The channel is laid level rather than to a fall, allowing uniform installation and predictable water movement throughout the perimeter.

  • Low Maintenance Design: Jetting eyes and corner pieces available in the Waterguard range allow for regular cleaning and inspection to maintain system performance over time.

Typical Applications

  • Basement Waterproofing: Designed for use in domestic and commercial basement conversions where a cavity drain membrane system is employed to prevent damp and flooding.

  • Cellar Waterproofing: An essential component in the renovation and waterproofing of traditional cellars that are being adapted for habitable use or storage.

  • New-Build Retaining Walls: Perfect for installing at the wall/floor junction in new-build developments to control groundwater ingress through retaining structures.

  • Below-Ground Plant Rooms: Used in areas requiring moisture control to protect equipment and installations from water damage in underground plant and utility spaces.

  • Tanked Rooms in Commercial Buildings: Supports the long-term waterproofing of car parks, lift pits, and other below-ground rooms requiring robust drainage management.

  • Retrofit Projects: Ideal for retrofit applications in older buildings where rising or penetrating damp is a problem and a full cavity membrane and drainage system is being installed.

Health & Safety Recommendations

Before commencing installation, ensure that all personnel involved are familiar with relevant health and safety regulations. Appropriate PPE, including gloves, protective footwear, and eye protection, should be worn throughout the procedure.

Consult the product’s safety data sheet and follow standard site hygiene practices. Care should be taken when working around excavation areas and during any cutting or placement of materials to avoid injury.

Site Preparation

Begin by forming a continuous trough at the base of the internal wall where it meets the floor slab. The trough should be approximately 130mm wide and 130mm deep to accommodate the Waterguard Drainage Channel and associated drainage aggregate. Ensure the area is free from debris, laitance, loose material, or any contaminants that may affect the installation or drainage performance.

It is essential that the underlying surface is sound and provides a stable base for the channel system. Apply the Wykamol Cavity Drain Membrane to the wall, ensuring it terminates at least 100mm below the existing floor level to allow for full integration with the Waterguard system.

Installation Method

Once the site is properly prepared, place a shallow, levelled bed of clean 20mm stone along the base of the trough to support the Waterguard Channel. Position the Waterguard Channel with the vertical upstand flush against the wall and cavity drain membrane, ensuring that the system remains level throughout its run. This level placement is crucial, as the Waterguard system is designed to operate without falls, relying instead on natural or mechanical drainage points.

Connect consecutive lengths of channel using Waterguard Connector Pieces, ensuring secure alignment and minimal movement. At corners, use the Waterguard Swept Corner Piece to maintain continuity around the perimeter. To allow for directional changes or connections to sump systems, insert a Waterguard T-Piece or Extended Jetting Eye as required. Where water must be directed to a sump or external gully, insert a Waterguard 50mm Channel Outlet into the channel at the desired discharge point.

Any open ends should be closed off using Waterguard End Caps. Once the channel layout is complete, infill the space between the outer edge of the channel and the wall of the trough with clean 20mm stone, ensuring a flush finish with the flat surface of the Waterguard Channel.

If a floor membrane is to be installed as part of a full Type C system, the remaining floor area should be made good using 20mm stone. Lay the membrane over the floor area and seal all junctions using Wykamol Corner Strip to ensure a continuous waterproof seal. If a membrane is not being installed over the floor, make good with approximately 50mm of screed, being careful not to cover or obstruct the drainage channel.

Maintenance

The Waterguard Drainage Channel is a key component of a maintainable waterproofing system. It is essential that the system be jetted via the Flexible Jetting Eye or Extended Jetting Eye at least once every six months to ensure continued performance and to prevent blockage from silt or debris.

This procedure should ideally be undertaken by the original installer under a maintenance contract or by the property owner. During this routine maintenance, any sump pumps (where installed) should be activated and flushed with water to confirm functionality.

Additionally, the sump chamber should be inspected and cleared of sludge or silt build-up. It is also recommended that high-water-level alarms and sensors be tested during this process to ensure they remain operational.
