Timber Joist Repair

Any joist or beam end in direct contact with a wet wall will eventually succumb to fungal attack and decay (rot) thus loosing its strength, it may even break. Should this happen the problem of replacement is expensive and time consuming.

Bower Beams can be used to effect a quick, cheap and easy but secure and long lasting replacement.

Independent tests have shown that the Bower Beam is capable of withstanding loads in excess of the design loads of the wooden joists they are supporting which will in turn, be isolated from the source of the dampness and further risk.

All of these plates can be used as timber splicing plates by fastening an equal number of coach screws either side of the splice.

Bower Beams are supplied in pairs, available in 4 Sizes:

  • BM6 - (W) 100mm x (L) 600mm (Cut back to 6")

  • BM9 - (W) 100mm x (L) 700mm (Cut back to 9")

  • BM17 - (W) 100mm x (L) 1000mm (Cut back to 17")

  • BM17W - (W) 150mm x (L) 1000mm (Cut back to 17")

Coach Screws supplied with each pair.

Installation

1. Cut away the affected timber up to the required length from the joist end.

2. Offer up the two halves of the Bower Beam to the joist and slide forward into the socket. Secure with nails.

3. Drill the required number of pilot holes for the coach screws (not opposite each other).

4. Tighten down the coach screws. Note: a blocking piece will be necessary on large cut backs to fasten down the floor boards. Joist widths from 2 inches (50mm) up to 6 inches (150mm) can be replaced by this method. Normal treatment to dispel further fungal attack should be carried out.

    Interlocking Wedges

Today’s technologies and materials have combined to produce builders wedges of such consistent shape, strength and durability as to make them suitable for a whole range of uses for professional contractors and joiners.

Folded wedges allow adjustment for levelling and aligning various building components. As they are exactly complementary pairs, they present parallel faces for even loading so providing a support block of consistent dimensions.

Interlocking ribbed surfaces make incremental adjustment easy providing grip to prevent subsequent slipping.

Unlike wooden wedges, they need no preparation, they don't rot, shrink, crack or split and can be nailed through for final fixing providing a stable and permanent installation.

The increasingly popular wood flooring and decking is a dream to install with Wedgit®, as are window and door casings, wall claddings, roofing timbers and rafters even heavy precast sections.

      • Repair of Corner Pieces in Furniture.

      • Repair of Wooden Constructions, Marine Applications etc.

      • Repairing Chips and Damage in Parquet and Laminate Floors.

      Application

      Surface Preparation:

Note: If you intend to overstain the wood once filled always choose the colour of filler that nearest matches the wood you are filling, NOT the stain you intend to use.

As the filler may absorb some stains at different rates to the surrounding timber, always test a small area first.

Before applying, ensure surfaces are clean, dry, sound and free from dust or any contaminants that may affect adhesion. Lightly sanding the area will improve adhesion.

For areas damaged by wet rot, remove as much rotten wood as possible and harden the remaining area with Everbuild Wet Rot Wood Hardener which will give a solid base for filling.

      Application:

Mix a golf ball volume of Filler (Approx 38mm diameter) and a 38mm strip of Hardener into a homogeneous paste using the spatula provided.

Press firmly into the surface requiring repair, leaving the filler slightly proud of the surface for sanding.

      Finishing:

Leave to dry for approximately 30 minutes before finishing by sanding / staining etc.

      Limitations:

Do not push mixture back into pack once mixed. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Testing of small area for colour match is recommended. Discard mixed material after 10 minutes if unused.

As the manufacturer cannot know all the uses its products may be put to, it is the users responsibility to determine suitability for use.
