Plasterable Mesh Tape For Waterproof And Damp Proof Membranes
Platinum Mesh Tape is a specialist self-adhesive membrane tape designed for waterproofing and damp proofing systems where meshed membranes will receive a direct plaster or render finish. In these installations, the joint between adjoining membrane sheets needs to be sealed effectively while still providing a suitable surface for the finishing material to grip. Platinum Mesh Tape achieves this by combining a butyl rubber sealing backing with a textured polypropylene fleece face. The butyl backing bonds to the membrane and helps seal the joint, while the fleece surface provides the mechanical key needed for plaster or render to continue cleanly across the taped seam.
Fleece-Faced Butyl Tape For Direct Plaster And Render Finishes
The textured fleece face is the key feature that separates Platinum Mesh Tape from plain butyl sealing tapes such as Platinum Corner Tape or Platinum Joint Sealing Membrane Tape. Plain butyl tapes are designed to form waterproof joints, but they do not provide a surface that can be directly plastered or rendered over. Platinum Mesh Tape is designed for areas where the joint must be integrated into the finished internal wall surface, helping plaster or render maintain a continuous key across the membrane seam. Because the fleece surface is central to its purpose, Platinum Mesh Tape is primarily intended for meshed membranes including Platinum DM2 Mesh, Platinum DM3 Mesh and Platinum CV8 Mesh Membrane.
100mm Mesh Tape For Seams, Repairs And Sealed Membrane Details
Platinum Mesh Tape is supplied in 100mm wide rolls and is available in 20m, 10m or 5m lengths, giving installers practical options for full installations, smaller detailing tasks and local repairs. The 100mm width provides good coverage across membrane joints, allowing the tape to bridge the seam while leaving sufficient contact area on either side for secure butyl bonding. Its split release backing liner with finger-lift overlap supports accurate handling, positioning and controlled peeling, especially along longer joints. Platinum Mesh Tape is suitable for Platinum waterproofing and damp proofing membrane systems, as well as compatible Newton, Platon and Wykamol below-ground waterproofing and above-ground damp proofing systems where a fleece-faced butyl mesh tape is required. It is also suitable over butted joints, sealed laps, protrusions, damaged membrane areas and joints already sealed with Platinum Joint Sealing Membrane Tape, Platinum Waterseal Rope or Platinum Corner Tape to reinstate a plasterable or renderable surface.

Q) What is Platinum Mesh Tape used for?
A) Platinum Mesh Tape is used to join, seal and reinforce meshed membrane joints while providing a plasterable or renderable surface across the joint area. It combines a self-adhesive butyl backing with a textured polypropylene fleece face, allowing it to seal the membrane seam while also giving plaster or render a suitable key. This makes it useful where meshed waterproof or damp proof membranes are finished directly with plaster or render. It is commonly used over butted joints, sealed laps, protrusions, damaged membrane areas and details that need the finishing key reinstated. Platinum Mesh Tape helps the finish continue across the joint without creating a weak or smooth seam.
Q) How does Platinum Mesh Tape work?
A) Platinum Mesh Tape works by combining two functions in one tape. The butyl backing bonds to clean, dry membrane surfaces and helps seal the joint or repair area beneath it. The textured polypropylene fleece face remains exposed, giving plaster or render a surface it can grip to. This is important because plain butyl tapes can create a waterproof seal, but they do not provide a suitable direct finishing key. Platinum Mesh Tape allows the joint to be sealed while still forming part of the finished internal wall build-up. When applied correctly, it helps carry the plaster or render key across membrane seams, sealed details and local repairs.
Q) Which membranes can Platinum Mesh Tape be used with?
A) Platinum Mesh Tape is suitable for use with meshed membranes such as Platinum DM2 Mesh, Platinum DM3 Mesh and Platinum CV8 Mesh Membrane, where the wall finish is applied directly over the membrane. These membranes are commonly used in waterproofing and damp proofing systems where plaster or render needs to bond to the membrane face. The tape helps seal and bridge the joint between sheets while keeping the surface suitable for finishing. Platinum Mesh Tape can also be used with compatible Newton, Platon and Wykamol meshed membrane systems where a fleece-faced butyl tape is required to reinstate the plaster or render key over joints or sealed details.
Q) Where should Platinum Mesh Tape be used?
A) Platinum Mesh Tape should be used wherever a meshed membrane joint, repair or detail needs to be sealed while remaining suitable for direct plastering or rendering. Typical uses include butted joints between Platinum DM2 Mesh, Platinum DM3 Mesh or Platinum CV8 Mesh Membrane sheets, sealed laps, protrusions, damaged membrane surfaces, local repairs and disturbed mesh areas. It can also be applied over joints already sealed with Platinum Joint Sealing Membrane Tape, Platinum Waterseal Rope or Platinum Corner Tape. In those cases, Platinum Mesh Tape reinstates the textured surface key above the waterproof seal, helping the finishing material bond across the detail without leaving a weak point.
Q) Can Platinum Mesh Tape be used over Platinum Joint Sealing Membrane Tape or Corner Tape?
A) Yes, Platinum Mesh Tape can be used as an overtape above joints already sealed with Platinum Joint Sealing Membrane Tape, Platinum Waterseal Rope or Platinum Corner Tape. This is useful because those products form the waterproof seal, but they do not provide a fleece surface for plaster or render. Platinum Mesh Tape is applied over the sealed detail so the textured face remains exposed and the finish can bond properly across the joint. This approach is especially important on meshed membrane systems where a direct internal finish must continue across seams, laps, corners, service details or local repairs. It helps avoid smooth areas that could cause weak adhesion.
Q) How do you apply Platinum Mesh Tape?
A) Platinum Mesh Tape should be applied to clean, dry membrane surfaces. The tape is positioned over the joint, repair or detailing area, then pressed firmly so the self-adhesive butyl backing bonds properly to the membrane. The split release backing liner with finger-lift overlap helps make application easier, allowing controlled peeling and more accurate positioning, especially on longer joints. The tape should bridge the seam evenly, leaving enough contact area on both sides for a secure bond. The fleece face must remain exposed, as this is the part that provides the plaster or render key. Dust, moisture, loose material and poorly seated membrane sections should be avoided before application.
Q) What size rolls are available for Platinum Mesh Tape?
A) Platinum Mesh Tape is supplied in 100mm wide rolls, available in 20m, 10m and 5m lengths. The 100mm width gives good coverage across membrane joints and detailing areas, allowing the tape to bridge the seam while leaving sufficient contact area on each side for the butyl backing to bond securely. The 20m roll is suitable for larger membrane installations, the 10m roll is useful for smaller rooms or medium detailing work, and the 5m roll is practical for local repairs or limited joint treatment. This range of roll lengths helps installers choose the right amount of tape for the job while reducing unnecessary waste.
Q) What are the main advantages of Platinum Mesh Tape?
A) The main advantage of Platinum Mesh Tape is that it seals meshed membrane joints while preserving a surface that can accept plaster or render. Its self-adhesive butyl backing creates a secure bond to the membrane, while the textured polypropylene fleece face helps the finishing material grip over the joint. The split release liner makes handling and positioning easier, particularly on longer seams or awkward details. It is also versatile, as it can be used with Platinum DM2 Mesh, Platinum DM3 Mesh, Platinum CV8 Mesh Membrane and compatible Newton, Platon and Wykamol systems. Its 100mm width gives practical coverage for joints, repairs, protrusions and overtaping sealed details.
Q) Can Platinum Mesh Tape be used for repairs and protrusions?
A) Yes, Platinum Mesh Tape can be used for local membrane repairs and for detailing around protrusions such as pipes, services, brackets and other interruptions in the membrane surface. Where a meshed membrane has been cut, damaged or disturbed, the tape helps seal the affected area while restoring a textured fleece surface for plaster or render. It can also be used where a fixing plug has failed to locate securely or where the membrane surface needs to be prepared again for finishing. The tape should be carefully shaped and pressed firmly into place, ensuring the butyl backing bonds to the membrane and the fleece face remains exposed for the final finish.
Q) What are the main limitations of Platinum Mesh Tape?
A) Platinum Mesh Tape should not be treated as a replacement for every sealing product within a waterproofing or damp proofing membrane system. Its main purpose is to seal and reinstate a plasterable or renderable surface over meshed membrane joints, repairs and detailed areas. For internal waterproof sheet joints, products such as Platinum Joint Sealing Membrane Tape, Platinum Waterseal Rope or Platinum Corner Tape may still be needed underneath, with Platinum Mesh Tape applied above to provide the finishing key. The tape must be applied to clean, dry surfaces and pressed firmly into place. The fleece face must remain exposed, as contamination or covering can reduce plaster or render adhesion.
