Specialist Butyl Waterproofing Tape For Critical Membrane Joints And Details
Platinum Corner Tape is a specialist waterproofing tape designed to seal the details that are difficult or impossible to protect using membrane sheets alone. In cavity drain membrane and structural waterproofing installations, the main membrane area represents only one part of the complete system. Joints, overlaps, cut edges, internal corners, wall-to-floor junctions, pipe penetrations, service entries and shaped areas around irregular substrates all need to remain watertight if the system is to perform correctly over the long term. Platinum Corner Tape is applied directly over these vulnerable areas to link the adjoining membrane surfaces together, creating a continuous and dependable waterproof barrier throughout the more intricate and exposed parts of the installation where water ingress is most likely to occur.
Flexible Butyl Rubber Construction With Universal Membrane Compatibility
The tape is manufactured from a butyl rubber compound, which is particularly well suited to below-ground waterproofing and cavity drain membrane detailing because it remains flexible, adhesive and highly resistant to water ingress over extended periods of service. Its self-adhesive face bonds securely to clean, dry membrane surfaces, allowing it to conform closely to the profile of the membrane and accommodate minor irregularities in the substrate or detailing area. This helps create a consistent and reliable seal across flat membrane joints, angled junctions and shaped sections where the membrane has been cut or formed around obstacles. Platinum Corner Tape can be used within the Platinum waterproof membrane system and is equally suitable for universal use with Newton CDM, Platon and Wykamol waterproofing systems where a dependable butyl jointing tape is required.
Two Sizes Available For Standard And Heavy Duty Detailing Requirements
Platinum Corner Tape is available in two sizes to suit different installation requirements across a range of waterproofing projects. The standard tape measures 100mm wide by 20m long with a thickness of 0.8mm, making it well suited to general membrane jointing, lap sealing and straightforward detailing work. The heavy duty version measures 150mm wide by 20m long with a thickness of 1.0mm, providing a wider and more robust sealing detail for demanding areas such as wall-to-floor junctions, below-ground waterproofing interfaces and more complex membrane transitions. The heavy duty version also includes a split release liner with a finger-lift overlap, allowing easier handling, more accurate positioning and controlled peeling during application. Where a plasterable surface is required over a sealed joint, Platinum Mesh Tape should be applied over the top.

Q) What is Platinum Corner Tape used for?
A) Platinum Corner Tape is used to create watertight seals in cavity drain and waterproof membrane systems, especially at points where a membrane sheet alone cannot form a complete waterproof detail. It is commonly applied over joints, overlaps, internal corners, wall-to-floor junctions, membrane cuts, service penetrations and awkward shaped areas. In basement waterproofing and damp proof membrane installations, these detailing points are often the most vulnerable areas of the system. Platinum Corner Tape helps link membrane surfaces together, preventing weak points where water could track through. Its self-adhesive butyl construction makes it practical for professional waterproofing work where long-term sealing continuity is essential.
Q) How does Platinum Corner Tape work in a waterproof membrane system?
A) Platinum Corner Tape works by bonding over vulnerable junctions and cut areas to create a continuous sealed layer between adjoining waterproof membrane sections. The butyl rubber compound adheres to clean, dry membrane surfaces and remains flexible enough to follow corners, laps and small surface irregularities. When pressed firmly into position, it helps close gaps between membrane edges and links the waterproof layer across details that would otherwise be difficult to seal. This is particularly important in cavity drain membrane systems, where any interruption around joints, penetrations or wall-to-floor junctions can become a route for moisture movement. Correct application helps maintain the overall integrity of the waterproofing design.
Q) Where should Platinum Corner Tape be used?
A) Platinum Corner Tape should be used wherever a waterproof membrane system needs additional sealing at joints, edges or complex details. Typical areas include wall-to-floor junctions, internal corners, membrane overlaps, butted joints, service penetrations, pipe entries, cable routes, local repairs and areas where the membrane has been cut or shaped around an obstacle. It is especially useful in below-ground waterproofing systems, cellar conversions and basement membrane installations where moisture pressure and detailing quality matter. It can also be used in compatible Platinum, Newton CDM, Platon and Wykamol waterproof membrane systems where a self-adhesive butyl jointing tape is required to maintain sealing continuity.
Q) What sizes of Platinum Corner Tape are available?
A) Platinum Corner Tape is available in practical sizes to suit different waterproofing details. Standard full roll lengths measure 100mm x 20m x 0.8mm, which is well suited to general membrane jointing, lap sealing, overlap sealing and straightforward detailing work. The heavy duty version measures 150mm x 20m x 1.0mm and provides a wider, thicker seal for more demanding areas such as wall-to-floor junctions, below-ground waterproofing interfaces and complex membrane transitions. We also offer smaller cuts of 10m and 5m lengths. The heavy duty tape also includes a split release liner with finger-lift overlap, making it easier to position accurately and peel back gradually during installation, particularly on wider or more awkward sealing details.
Q) How do you apply Platinum Corner Tape at a wall-to-floor junction?
A) At a wall-to-floor junction, Platinum Corner Tape is normally folded along its length so the crease sits tightly into the angle between the wall membrane and floor membrane. The release backing is then removed gradually while the tape is pressed firmly onto both membrane faces. This links the vertical and horizontal membrane surfaces into one sealed waterproof detail. The tape should be applied only to clean, dry surfaces, and firm hand pressure should be used to ensure full contact across the full width. On more demanding details, the 150mm heavy duty version may be preferred because it provides a wider contact area and a more robust seal.
Q) Can Platinum Corner Tape be used around pipes and service penetrations?
A) Yes, Platinum Corner Tape can be used around pipes, conduits, cables and other service penetrations where the waterproof membrane has been interrupted. These areas need careful detailing because any cut through the membrane can become a weak point if it is not sealed properly. The tape can be shaped and pressed around the penetration to help link the cut membrane edge back into the surrounding waterproof layer. For irregular service details, the tape must be applied carefully so it remains tight, continuous and fully bonded to the membrane surface. The surface should be clean and dry before application, and all edges should be firmly pressed down to reduce the risk of water tracking.
Q) Is Platinum Corner Tape compatible with other waterproof membrane systems?
A) Platinum Corner Tape is designed for use within the Platinum Cavity Drain and Waterproof Membrane system, but it can also be used with compatible Newton CDM, Platon Waterproof Membrane and Wykamol Waterproof systems where a butyl membrane jointing tape is required. This makes it a useful universal detailing tape for installers working across different cavity drain membrane systems. However, compatibility should always be considered in relation to the specific membrane surface, site condition and waterproofing design. The tape must be applied to clean, dry and suitable surfaces to achieve proper adhesion. Where a manufacturer-specific system warranty is involved, the full specification should be checked before substituting any ancillary product.
Q) Can you plaster or render directly over Platinum Corner Tape?
A) Platinum Corner Tape is not designed to provide a direct plaster or render key by itself. Its main role is to create a waterproof butyl seal, not to provide a textured surface for finishes to grip onto. Where a sealed area also needs to receive plaster, render or a compatible finishing coat, Platinum Mesh Tape should be applied over the top of the Platinum Corner Tape. This gives the surface a suitable key while allowing the butyl tape underneath to perform its sealing function. This is an important detail because trying to plaster directly over a smooth butyl tape can result in poor adhesion, cracking or finish failure.
Q) What preparation is needed before using Platinum Corner Tape?
A) Preparation is essential because Platinum Corner Tape relies on clean, dry membrane surfaces to form a reliable seal. Before application, the membrane should be free from dust, moisture, grease, loose debris and any contamination that could reduce adhesion. If the tape is being used over a joint, overlap or penetration, the area should be checked first to ensure the membrane is correctly positioned and stable. The tape should then be aligned carefully before full contact is made, especially with the heavy duty version where the split release liner helps with controlled positioning. Once applied, the tape should be pressed firmly across the full width to remove air gaps and improve contact.
Q) What are the limitations of Platinum Corner Tape?
A) Platinum Corner Tape is a waterproofing detail tape, not a replacement for correct membrane design, drainage planning or proper system installation. It should not be used on dirty, wet, dusty or unstable surfaces, as poor adhesion can compromise the seal. It is also not intended to provide a plasterable finish on its own, so Platinum Mesh Tape should be used over it where plaster or render needs to bond. The tape must be applied with full contact and should not be stretched, folded badly or left bridging unsupported gaps. In basement and cavity drain systems, it should be used as part of a complete waterproofing specification rather than treated as a standalone waterproofing solution.
