Why Choosing a Specialist Product Like SMX 506 Matters

When working with high-performance self-cleaning glass, such as Pilkington Activ™ or Saint-Gobain Bioclean™, it is critical to use a sealant specifically engineered and certified for compatibility with these specialist glazing systems. Soudal SMX 506 is purpose-formulated to bond securely to self-cleaning glass without compromising the integrity of the active surface coating. It complies with stringent requirements for use with self-cleaning technologies and has undergone extensive weathering and compatibility testing to ensure long-term performance.

Using a generic hybrid polymer sealant — even one marketed as “universal” or “suitable for glass” — may seem like a cost-effective alternative. However, these products often lack the precise formulation and independent testing required for use with coated glass. They may not offer the same level of UV resistance, chemical stability, or flexibility over time, and most importantly, they can interfere with or damage the hydrophilic surface layer of self-cleaning glass. This can result in discolouration, reduced self-cleaning functionality, or adhesive failure.

Additionally, many standard sealants do not comply with relevant industry standards for glazing installations, nor are they backed by the manufacturer warranties that come with approved products like SMX 506. For professional glazing work where longevity, appearance, and performance are essential — particularly in architectural or commercial applications — cutting corners with an uncertified product can lead to costly repairs or full glass replacement.

Choosing SMX 506 ensures correct adhesion, weather durability, and lasting compatibility with self-cleaning glass systems. It also guarantees that the installation meets the manufacturer’s recommendations and maintains any glass warranties in place. Always consult both the sealant and glass manufacturers before substituting with alternative products, regardless of supplier claims.

Its neutral chemistry ensures that it will not degrade or affect the delicate coating that enables these glass types to maintain their self-cleaning function. Standard sealants often interfere with this coating, but SMX 506 has been developed and independently verified for compatibility, making it the ideal and recommended choice for such applications.

Q) What makes Soudal SMX 506 different from regular glazing sealants?

A) Unlike general-purpose sealants, Soudal SMX 506 is engineered specifically for bonding and sealing self-cleaning glass. Its hybrid polymer formula combines the flexibility and adhesion of silicone with the durability and paintability of polyurethane. It is solvent-free, has extremely low emissions (EC1+ certified), and resists UV, moisture, and weather extremes. Most importantly, it does not interfere with the unique surface treatments found on self-cleaning glass, unlike many other standard glazing mastics.

Q) Can Soudal SMX 506 be used for exterior glazing?

A) Yes, Soudal SMX 506 is highly suitable for exterior glazing applications. It offers excellent resistance to weathering, UV radiation, and temperature extremes. It maintains its bond and elasticity even under continual exposure to the elements, making it a reliable choice for curtain walls, conservatories, skylights and window perimeters that are installed outdoors. Its bubble-free curing technology ensures a clean, professional finish, even in high humidity.

Q) What materials does Soudal SMX 506 adhere to?

A) Soudal SMX 506 adheres strongly to a wide range of common building materials, including glass, coated and painted aluminium, timber, uPVC, stainless steel, and galvanised metals. It bonds without a primer in most cases, even on slightly damp substrates, although a preliminary adhesion test is always recommended. It should not be used on polyethylene, polypropylene, PTFE (Teflon®), copper, or copper-containing alloys such as brass and bronze, as adhesion or staining issues may occur.

Q) Does Soudal SMX 506 require a primer?

A) In most applications, Soudal SMX 506 does not require a primer. It adheres well to clean, dry substrates including self-cleaning glass and various frame materials without the need for pre-treatment. However, when dealing with painted surfaces or those with unusual coatings, conducting a preliminary adhesion test is recommended. On non-porous surfaces, Soudal Surface Activator can be used to further enhance bonding performance if required.

Q) Can Soudal SMX 506 be painted over?

A) Yes, Soudal SMX 506 is paintable with most water-based paint systems. It allows for wet-on-wet application, meaning paint can be applied soon after tooling the sealant. However, alkyd-based paints may exhibit slower drying times, and compatibility testing is strongly recommended before full application. The sealant must be free from soapy residue or surface contaminants before painting to ensure proper adhesion of the coating.

Q) How should surfaces be prepared before applying Soudal SMX 506?

A) Surfaces must be structurally sound, dry, clean and free from dust, oil, grease, or other contaminants that might interfere with adhesion. For self-cleaning glass, care must be taken to avoid scratching the coating. Clean using a lint-free cloth and a compatible glass cleaner or alcohol-based solution. For maximum bond strength on coated frames or difficult substrates, a compatibility test or surface activation may be necessary.

Q) What is the correct method for applying Soudal SMX 506?

A) Soudal SMX 506 should be applied with a standard cartridge or pneumatic caulking gun. The nozzle should be cut to the desired joint width, and the sealant applied in a continuous bead to avoid air pockets. Immediately after application, the sealant should be tooled using a spatula or suitable smoothing tool dampened with soapy water. Tooling must be completed before skin formation occurs, typically within 20 minutes under normal conditions.

Q) Can Soudal SMX 506 be used in humid or damp conditions?

A) Yes, Soudal SMX 506 performs well in damp conditions and humid environments. It can be applied to slightly moist (not wet) surfaces and will cure without bubbling, even in high humidity. However, for best results and consistent finish, ensure surfaces are as dry as possible and that the ambient temperature is within the recommended range of 5°C to 35°C.

Q) What is the curing time of Soudal SMX 506?

A) Under standard conditions (23°C and 50% relative humidity), Soudal SMX 506 forms a skin in approximately 20 minutes and cures at a rate of 2mm per 24 hours. Thicker applications or colder, more humid environments may increase curing time. It is important not to disturb the sealant during the curing period to ensure proper bonding and avoid aesthetic defects.

Q) Is Soudal SMX 506 suitable for structural glazing?

A) No, Soudal SMX 506 is not suitable for structural glazing applications where the sealant must bear the load of the glass. It is designed for perimeter and weather seals in non-loadbearing joints, particularly around self-cleaning glass installations. For structural glazing, a different Soudal product specifically certified for structural bonding must be used.

Q) Can Soudal SMX 506 be used indoors?

A) Yes, Soudal SMX 506 is safe and suitable for indoor use. Its solvent-free, isocyanate-free formulation and EC1+ low-emission classification make it ideal for environments with strict air quality requirements such as residential buildings, healthcare facilities, and schools. It produces no unpleasant odours and poses minimal health risks when applied with proper ventilation and personal protective equipment.

Q) Will Soudal SMX 506 resist mould and algae?

A) Soudal SMX 506 offers good resistance to biological growth such as mould and algae, especially in outdoor glazing installations where the seal is subject to rain and humidity. Its smooth, non-porous surface discourages the accumulation of dirt and microbial colonies, supporting long-term aesthetic and structural performance.

Q) Can Soudal SMX 506 be submerged in water?

A) No, Soudal SMX 506 is not suitable for applications involving permanent immersion in water. It is highly water-resistant and ideal for exposed joints in outdoor environments but should not be used in conditions where the sealant will be continuously submerged, such as in swimming pools or water tanks. For submerged joints, alternative specialist sealants must be used.

Q) How much sealant do I need for my project?

A) The quantity of Soudal SMX 506 required depends on the joint dimensions and total length. As a general rule, a 290ml cartridge will provide around 12 linear metres of a 5mm x 5mm joint. Wider or deeper joints will reduce coverage. Always calculate the total joint volume and include a margin for wastage or touch-ups.
