Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals

Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals are specialist heavy-duty fixing plugs manufactured from glass-filled polyamide for use with the Platon Waterproof Membrane System. They are designed to secure Platon cavity drain membranes, including Platon P8 Membrane and Platon P8 Mesh Membrane, to retaining structures, brickwork, concrete, stone and other suitable masonry substrates.

Each plug measures 10mm in diameter x 75mm in length and is installed into a 10mm drilled hole through the membrane stud and into the wall. As this version is supplied without sealing washers, it does not form a watertight seal at the fixing point by itself. It is therefore well suited to low-risk above-ground applications, non-water-bearing areas, or details where the fixing is sealed separately with Platon Sealing Rope.

The plug also accepts 5mm size 10 threaded screws to a maximum depth of 30mm, for fixing battens, ply board, wall ties, tracking and dry-lining systems without creating additional membrane penetrations.

Heavy-Duty Unsealed Fixing Plugs For Platon Cavity Drain Waterproof Membranes

Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals are heavy-duty membrane fixing plugs used to mechanically secure Platon waterproof membranes to masonry substrates during cavity drain membrane installations. Their primary purpose is to hold cavity drain membranes such as Platon P8 Membrane and Platon P8 Mesh Membrane firmly against the wall during installation and before internal finishes or lining systems are fitted over the membrane. Manufactured from glass-filled polyamide, the plug provides a durable and robust fixing body well suited to waterproof membrane installations where strong and dependable anchorage is required into brick, concrete, stone or other appropriate masonry backgrounds encountered in basement waterproofing, cellar tanking and below-ground refurbishment projects of varying scale and complexity.

Unsealed 10mm Plug With Central Core For Secondary Ancillary Fixings

Measuring 10mm in diameter by 75mm in length, this plug is supplied without sealing washers and therefore does not provide a watertight compression seal at the fixing point on its own, making it most appropriate for low-risk above-ground installations, non-water-bearing areas, or situations where fixing penetrations are sealed separately with Platon Sealing Rope. In below-ground situations involving vaulted ceilings, brick arches, sloping soffits or other overhead and inclined surfaces, Platon Sealing Rope can be formed around the fixing detail where a washer seal would not sit evenly against the membrane. A central core through the plug receives 5mm size 10 threaded screws to a maximum depth of 30mm, allowing battens, ply board, wall ties, tracking and dry-lining systems to be fixed back without additional membrane penetrations.

Recommended Fixing Densities And Sealed Alternative For Below-Ground Installations

Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals are designed for use across the Platon Waterproof Membrane range, particularly with Platon P8 Waterproof Membrane and Platon P8 Mesh Waterproof Membrane. Indicative fixing densities are approximately 5 plugs per square metre for non-meshed membranes, where the membrane generally only needs to be held securely before an independent lining system is installed, and approximately 15 plugs per square metre for meshed membranes, where a closer fixing pattern is required to hold the membrane tight to the wall before direct plastering, rendering or suitable board finishes are applied. Where an integral sealed fixing is required for general below-ground wall membrane installation, Platon Brick Plugs With Seals should be specified, or Platon Brick Plug Sealing Washers can be purchased separately to seal this plug where needed.

Product Benefits

  • Heavy-Duty Glass-Filled Polyamide Construction: Manufactured from glass-filled polyamide, these plugs provide a strong and durable fixing body for securing Platon cavity drain membranes to suitable masonry substrates during waterproofing and damp proofing installations.

  • Designed for Platon Waterproof Membranes: Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals are well suited to use with Platon P8 Membrane and Platon P8 Mesh Membrane, helping installers select the correct fixing for Platon cavity drain membrane systems.

  • Suitable for Non-Sealed Fixing Details: Because the plugs are supplied without sealing washers, they are well suited to situations where an integral watertight compression seal is not required, such as low-risk above-ground or non-water-bearing applications.

  • Can Be Sealed Separately: Where a separate seal is required, the fixing detail can be sealed with Platon Sealing Rope, depending on whether the application is above ground, below ground, vaulted or inclined.

  • Useful for Vaulted and Inclined Surfaces: The non-washer format is practical for vaulted ceilings, brick arches, sloping soffits and overhead areas, where a flat compression washer may not seat evenly against the membrane.

  • 10mm x 75mm Plug Size: The 75mm plug length provides a strong fixing depth into suitable brick, concrete, stone and masonry substrates, provided the background is sound enough to hold the plug securely.

  • Central Screw Fixing Core: The plug accepts 5mm size 10 threaded screws to a maximum depth of 30mm, allowing battens, ply board, wall ties and dry-lining systems to be fixed through the plug without membrane damage.

  • Reduces Additional Membrane Penetrations: By allowing secondary fixings through the plug core, the system helps avoid unnecessary additional drilling through the waterproof membrane, reducing potential weak points in the installation.

  • Suitable for Meshed and Non-Meshed Membranes: These plugs can be used at approximately 5 plugs per m² for non-meshed membranes, and approximately 15 plugs per m² for meshed membranes requiring tighter restraint.

  • Sealing Washer Option Available: Platon Brick Plug Sealing Washers can be purchased separately in situations where the same plug needs to be adapted for a washer-sealed fixing detail.

Typical Applications

  • Platon P8 Membrane Fixing: Well suited to securing Platon P8 Waterproof Membrane to brick, concrete, stone or other masonry substrates, in situations where a non-sealed or separately sealed fixing detail is appropriate.

  • Platon P8 Mesh Membrane Fixing: Used with Platon P8 Mesh in situations where the membrane needs to be fixed more tightly to the wall before plastering, rendering or other compatible finishing systems are applied.

  • Low-Risk Above-Ground Installations: Well suited to above-ground membrane applications where the fixing point is not exposed to water pressure and an integral watertight washer seal is not required.

  • Non-Water-Bearing Membrane Areas: Appropriate for membrane fixing in areas where the plug hole is not expected to provide a route for water ingress, subject to the system design and substrate condition.

  • Vaulted Ceiling Membrane Fixing: Can be used for fixing membranes to vaulted ceilings, with Platon Sealing Rope used in situations where the fixing point needs to be sealed separately.

  • Brick Arch Waterproofing Details: Well suited to curved brick arch installations, where a washered plug may not compress evenly and a rope-sealed fixing detail is more appropriate.

  • Sloping Soffit Applications: Useful for securing membranes to sloping soffits or inclined substrates, where the fixing must hold the membrane securely while allowing a suitable separate sealing method.

  • Batten and Ply Board Fixing: The plug core allows battens and ply board to be fixed with 5mm size 10 screws to a maximum depth of 30mm, without creating extra membrane penetrations.

  • Dry-Lining System Support: Well suited to fixing tracking, wall ties and affixed dry-lining systems through the plug, helping support internal wall finishes in front of the membrane.

  • Masonry Substrate Fixing: Designed for use in brick, concrete, stone and other suitable masonry substrates, where a 10mm drilled hole can provide secure anchorage for the plug.

Q) What are Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals used for?

A) Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals are heavy-duty fixing plugs used to secure Platon cavity drain membranes to masonry substrates such as brick, concrete, stone and other suitable retaining structures. They are designed for use with Platon waterproof membrane systems, including Platon P8 Membrane and Platon P8 Mesh Membrane, where the membrane needs to be mechanically fixed to the wall before internal finishes are installed. Each plug is made from glass-filled polyamide for strength and durability, and measures 10mm in diameter x 75mm long. Because this version is supplied without sealing washers, it does not create a watertight fixing point by itself, so it should be used only where that is acceptable or where separate sealing is specified.

Q) What is the difference between Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals and Platon Brick Plugs With Seals?

A) The main difference is that Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals do not include the separate TPE sealing washers supplied with Platon Brick Plugs With Seals. A washered plug compresses against the membrane face to help seal the drilled fixing point, making it more suitable for general below-ground waterproofing situations where water resistance at each fixing is important. The version without seals is still the same heavy-duty 10mm x 75mm glass-filled polyamide plug, but it does not form a watertight compression seal on its own. It is better suited to low-risk above-ground applications, non-water-bearing areas, or details where the penetration is sealed separately using Platon Sealing Rope.

Q) Can Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals be used with Platon P8 Membrane?

A) Yes, Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals can be used with Platon P8 Membrane where a suitable non-sealed or separately sealed fixing detail is appropriate. Platon P8 is a cavity drain membrane used in waterproofing and damp management systems, and these plugs provide the mechanical fixing needed to hold the membrane securely against masonry substrates. In typical non-meshed membrane installations, fixing density is usually around 5 plugs per m², although the final requirement depends on the substrate, wall shape, detailing and the internal finish system being used. Where the installation is below ground and the fixing points need to be watertight, Platon Brick Plugs With Seals or separately purchased Platon Brick Plug Sealing Washers may be more appropriate.

Q) Are Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals suitable for Platon P8 Mesh Membrane?

A) Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals can be used with Platon P8 Mesh Membrane, but the fixing pattern is usually much tighter than with standard non-meshed membranes. Platon P8 Mesh is normally used where the membrane must be held closely to the wall before direct plastering, rendering or another compatible finish is applied. For that reason, a typical fixing rate is around 15 plugs per m², helping keep the membrane firm, flat and properly restrained against the substrate. Because these plugs do not include sealing washers, the installer must consider whether the fixing detail needs additional sealing. In water-bearing or below-ground areas, Platon Sealing Rope or Platon Brick Plug Sealing Washers are required.

Q) How do you install Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals?

A) Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals are installed by drilling a 10mm hole through a stud of the Platon membrane and into the masonry substrate. The plug is then inserted through the membrane and driven home with a club hammer until it secures the membrane firmly against the wall. The substrate must be sound enough to accept and hold the 75mm fixing, otherwise the plug may not grip properly. Because this version does not include a TPE washer, it should not be assumed to seal the fixing point. Where water resistance is needed, the fixing should be sealed separately using the correct Platon sealing method, such as Platon Sealing Rope or Platon Brick Plug Sealing Washers, depending on the application.

Q) When should Platon Sealing Rope be used with these plugs?

A) Platon Sealing Rope should be used when the plug fixing point needs to be sealed separately because the plug itself is supplied without a washer. Platon Sealing Rope is typically relevant where a sealed detail is required but an integral washer is not being used. The rope particularly useful in below-ground situations involving vaulted ceilings, brick arches, sloping soffits or other overhead and inclined surfaces, where a flat washer may not compress evenly against the membrane. The purpose is to seal around the penetration so the fixing does not become a weak point in the waterproofing system. The correct sealing method should always match the risk level, substrate and system design.

Q) Are Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals suitable for vaulted ceilings and brick arches?

A) Yes, Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals can be particularly useful for vaulted ceilings, brick arches and sloping soffit applications because a separate washer may not always sit evenly against curved or inclined membrane surfaces. On these types of details, the plug provides the mechanical fixing, while sealing can be formed separately with Platon Sealing Rope where the waterproofing design requires it. This approach allows the installer to fix the membrane securely while adapting the seal to the shape of the surface. Care is still needed around every fixing point, because vaulted and overhead installations can be more complex than flat wall work. The membrane must be fixed neatly, kept tight and detailed so water can drain correctly.

Q) How many Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals are needed per m²?

A) The number of Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals required depends mainly on the type of membrane being installed and the finish that will follow. As an indicative guide, Platon P8 Membrane, which is a non-meshed cavity drain membrane, is typically fixed at around 5 plugs per m². Platon P8 Mesh Membrane normally requires a much closer fixing pattern of around 15 plugs per m² because the mesh face is usually intended to support direct plastering, rendering or compatible board finishes. These figures are practical guidance rather than a substitute for project design. Substrate condition, corners, reveals, wall shape, movement, finishing method and whether a separate sealing detail is required can all affect the final fixing pattern.

Q) Can battens and dry-lining systems be fixed into Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals?

A) Yes, one of the key advantages of Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals is that they accept 5mm size 10 threaded screws through the centre of the plug, to a maximum depth of 30mm into the plug body. This allows timber battens, ply board, tracking, wall ties and suitable dry-lining systems to be fixed through the plug without drilling extra holes through the membrane. Typical batten sizes may include 25mm x 38mm or 25mm x 50mm, depending on the lining system and support requirements. To work out screw length, add the batten thickness to the required screw embedment into the plug, making sure the screw does not enter the plug by more than 30mm.

Q) What substrates can Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals be fixed into?

A) Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals are designed for fixing into suitable masonry substrates, including brickwork, concrete, stone and other stable retaining structures capable of holding a 10mm x 75mm mechanical fixing. The background must be sound, firm and able to resist the fixing load, otherwise the plug may loosen or fail to grip properly. Very friable brickwork, crumbling mortar, loose stone, hollow areas or unstable substrates should be assessed and repaired before installation. When working on older cellars, basements or mixed masonry walls, it is especially important to check the substrate condition before drilling. If the drilled hole breaks out or does not hold the plug securely, a new fixing position may be required.

Q) What are the main limitations of Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals?

A) The main limitation of Platon Brick Plugs Without Seals is that they do not form a watertight seal at the fixing point by themselves. They are therefore not the best choice for general water-bearing below-ground wall membrane fixing unless the penetration is sealed separately or Platon Brick Plug Sealing Washers are added. They should be used only where a non-sealed fixing is acceptable, or where the waterproofing design includes Platon Sealing Rope around the fixing detail. They also depend on a sound masonry substrate, so weak, friable or unstable walls can reduce fixing performance. For high-risk basement waterproofing areas, always consider whether Platon Brick Plugs With Seals would be the more suitable option.
