Reliable Fixing Plugs For Platon Damp Proof Membranes And Internal Wall Finishes

Platon Plaster Plugs are used to secure Platon damp proofing membranes firmly to internal masonry walls, keeping the membrane tight, stable and correctly positioned before the final wall finish is applied. They are most commonly specified in above-ground damp proofing applications, where the membrane is installed to separate new plaster, render or plasterboard from dampness, salts and contamination within the existing wall structure. Correct fixing is genuinely important because the membrane must remain completely stable during finishing operations. If it is not secured adequately, it may move, drum or flex behind the completed surface, affecting both the immediate appearance and the long-term performance and durability of the internal wall finish applied over it.

Available In Two Sizes For Sound And Softer Masonry Backgrounds

The plugs are available in two sizes to suit different wall conditions and installation requirements. The M8 x 50mm plug is well suited to general fixing into sound masonry, while the M8 x 70mm plug provides improved stability in situations where additional fixing depth is preferred or the substrate demands a longer anchorage. Installation normally requires an 8mm SDS drill bit to create a clean, accurate hole through the membrane and into the wall, though on softer masonry such as soft Victorian brickwork, handmade clay brick or older lime-mortar brickwork, a 7mm SDS drill bit may provide a noticeably tighter fit and better overall plug retention within the weaker background material before finishing work begins.

Compatible With Platon PB2 Mesh And Platon Plaster Base Membranes

Platon Plaster Plugs are well suited to both Platon PB2 Mesh and Platon Plaster Base Membranes, each of which creates a moisture-resistant separation layer between the damp wall and the internal finish while still allowing vapour diffusion. In higher risk damp situations, the plug head can be sealed using Platon Plaster Plug Seals or Newtonite 801 Mastic to reduce the risk of moisture tracking through the fixing point. Where Platon Plaster Base is used below ground, the M8 x 70mm fixing is specifically recommended and must be sealed with a bead of Platon Sealing Rope, as below-ground conditions are considerably more demanding and fixing penetrations must be properly sealed to help maintain the long-term integrity of the membrane installation.

  • Higher Risk Damp Wall Details: In more demanding situations, the plug head can be sealed using Platon Plaster Plug Seals or Newtonite 801 Mastic, helping reduce damp tracking through the fixing point.

  • Below-Ground Platon Plaster Base Details: Where Platon Plaster Base is used below ground, the 70mm fixing should be used and sealed with Platon Sealing Rope around the fixing point.

  • Salt-Contaminated Masonry Walls: The plugs are useful when fixing membranes that isolate new finishes from salt-contaminated walls, helping reduce the risk of staining, blistering and finish breakdown.

  • Refurbishment and Renovation Projects: Well suited to domestic and commercial damp proofing work where internal walls need a membrane system before plaster, render or plasterboard finishes are installed.

Q) What are Platon Plaster Plugs used for?

A) Platon Plaster Plugs are specialist fixings used to secure Platon damp proofing membranes to internal masonry walls, mainly in above-ground damp proofing applications. They hold membranes such as Platon PB2 Mesh and Platon Plaster Base firmly against the wall before plaster, render or dot and dab plasterboard finishes are applied. This is important because the membrane must stay stable during finishing and throughout service. If it is not fixed closely enough, the wall finish can move, drum, crack or feel hollow. Platon Plaster Plugs help create a secure mechanical fixing pattern, allowing the membrane to isolate new finishes from dampness, salts and contamination in the existing wall.

Q) Which Platon membranes can Platon Plaster Plugs be used with?

A) Platon Plaster Plugs are well suited to Platon PB2 Mesh and Platon Plaster Base Membranes. Platon PB2 Mesh is a meshed damp proof membrane designed to provide a surface key for plaster, render or compatible board adhesive. Platon Plaster Base is a non-mesh cavity membrane with an undercut, dovetail-shaped stud profile that physically holds plaster, render or adhesive-fixed plasterboard. Both membranes are used to separate new internal finishes from damp or salt-contaminated masonry while still allowing vapour diffusion. The plugs provide the mechanical restraint needed to keep these membranes stable and correctly positioned, which is especially important before wet plastering or rendering loads are applied.

Q) Are Platon Plaster Plugs for above-ground or below-ground use?

A) Platon Plaster Plugs are mainly intended for above-ground internal damp proofing work, where Platon damp proofing membranes are fixed to masonry walls before plaster, render or plasterboard finishes. Typical uses include refurbishment of damp internal walls, salt-contaminated masonry and older properties where a membrane system is being used to protect the new wall finish. They can be used in some below-ground Platon Plaster Base details, but extra care is needed. Where Platon Plaster Base is used below ground, the M8 x 70mm fixing is recommended, and each fixing must be sealed with Platon Sealing Rope to help protect the membrane system against water tracking through the fixing point.

Q) What size Platon Plaster Plugs are available?

A) Platon Plaster Plugs are available in two main sizes: M8 x 50mm and M8 x 70mm. The M8 x 50mm plug is generally used for standard fixing into sound masonry, where the wall is firm enough to provide a reliable anchor and the application does not require additional fixing depth. The M8 x 70mm plug provides improved stability and is useful where a deeper fixing is preferred, such as less consistent backgrounds or more demanding installation details. The 70mm version is also recommended where Platon Plaster Base is used below ground, provided the fixing is sealed correctly with Platon Sealing Rope as part of the system detail.

Q) What drill bit size is needed for Platon Plaster Plugs?

A) Platon Plaster Plugs normally require an 8mm SDS drill bit when fixing into sound masonry. The hole should be drilled through the membrane and into the wall cleanly, allowing the plug to anchor properly without damaging the membrane unnecessarily. On softer masonry, such as soft Victorian brickwork, handmade clay brick or older lime-mortar walls, a 7mm SDS drill bit may give a tighter fit and better grip. This can help where an 8mm hole feels too loose or where the plug does not hold firmly. The aim is always a secure mechanical fixing, so the drill size should suit the actual wall condition rather than being chosen blindly.

Q) How many Platon Plaster Plugs are needed per m²?

A) The number of Platon Plaster Plugs needed per m² depends on the finish being applied over the membrane. For direct plastering or rendering, around 16 plugs per m² should be used because the membrane needs to be held firmly and evenly against the wall while the wet finish is applied and cures. This helps reduce movement, drumming and surface instability. For dot and dab plasterboard, around 10 plugs per m² is normally sufficient because the adhesive dabs and boards provide a different type of finishing system. The fixing pattern should still be even and consistent, with extra attention around edges, corners, reveals and areas where the membrane could lift.

Q) How are Platon Plaster Plugs installed?

A) Platon Plaster Plugs are installed by drilling through the membrane and into the masonry substrate, then driving the plug into the hole so it holds the membrane tightly against the wall. The membrane should be positioned correctly first, with sheets aligned and ready for fixing. An 8mm SDS drill bit is normally used on sound masonry, while a 7mm bit may be better on softer brickwork. Once the hole is drilled, the plug is inserted and tapped home until it secures the membrane firmly without damaging it. The fixing pattern should follow the required density for the chosen finish, with 16 plugs per m² for direct plaster or render and 10 plugs per m² for dot and dab plasterboard.

Q) Can Platon Plaster Plugs be used for direct plastering or rendering?

A) Yes, Platon Plaster Plugs can be used where Platon PB2 Mesh or Platon Plaster Base is being prepared for direct plastering or rendering, provided the correct fixing density and membrane specification are followed. For this type of finish, 16 plugs per m² should be used to hold the membrane tight to the wall and reduce movement during application. This is important because plaster and render place weight and pressure onto the membrane surface, especially while wet. If the membrane is under-fixed, it can flex or pull away from the substrate, which may affect the finished surface. A close, even fixing pattern helps create a more stable base for the applied finish.

Q) Can Platon Plaster Plugs be used with dot and dab plasterboard?

A) Yes, Platon Plaster Plugs can be used when Platon PB2 Mesh or Platon Plaster Base is being prepared for dot and dab plasterboard finishes. In this type of installation, around 10 plugs per m² is normally sufficient to secure the membrane before plasterboard adhesive dabs and boards are applied. The plugs keep the membrane restrained against the wall so the adhesive can be applied to a stable surface. Platon Plaster Base is particularly suitable for adhesive-fixed plasterboard because its dovetail-shaped stud profile provides a physical key. As with all membrane installations, the wall should be sound, the fixing pattern should be consistent, and the board system should be applied in line with the membrane specification.

Q) Do Platon Plaster Plugs need to be sealed?

A) Platon Plaster Plugs do not always need to be sealed in standard above-ground damp proofing applications, but sealing may be required in higher risk damp wall situations. Where additional protection is needed, the plug head can be sealed using Platon Plaster Plug Seals or Newtonite 801 Mastic to help reduce the risk of moisture tracking through the fixing point. This can be useful where the wall is more heavily damp, salt-contaminated or exposed to more demanding conditions. If Platon Plaster Base is used below ground, sealing becomes more important. In that situation, the M8 x 70mm fixing should be used and sealed with Platon Sealing Rope around the fixing point.

Q) What should I consider when fixing Platon Plaster Plugs into soft or old brickwork?

A) When fixing Platon Plaster Plugs into soft or older brickwork, the main issue is achieving a firm hold without creating an oversized or weak fixing hole. Soft Victorian brickwork, handmade clay brick and lime-mortar masonry can sometimes crumble or drill slightly larger than expected, especially if an 8mm SDS bit is too aggressive. In these cases, a 7mm SDS drill bit may provide a tighter fixing and better plug retention. The wall should be checked for loose, friable or unstable areas before installation, and any weak background should be avoided or repaired where necessary. A secure plug is essential, because the membrane needs to remain stable under plaster, render or plasterboard finishes.

Q) What are the main limitations of Platon Plaster Plugs?

A) Platon Plaster Plugs are designed for fixing Platon damp proofing membranes to suitable masonry substrates, so they should not be treated as universal fixings for every wall type or every waterproofing situation. They need a sound substrate that can hold the plug securely, and the correct drill bit size must be used for the wall condition. They are mainly for above-ground damp proofing, and below-ground use requires specific detailing, including M8 x 70mm plugs and Platon Sealing Rope where Platon Plaster Base is used below ground. They should also be installed at the correct fixing density. Under-fixing the membrane can lead to movement, drumming, poor finish quality and reduced long-term performance.
