Platon Mesh Tape
Platon Mesh Tape is a self-adhesive sealing tape with a textured polypropylene fleece surface, used within the Platon Waterproof Membrane System and Platon Damp Proofing System to seal membrane joints while providing a key for plaster or render. The butyl backing bonds to the membrane and helps seal the joint, while the fleece face remains exposed to accept the finishing material.
Supplied in 100mm wide x 10m long rolls, Platon Mesh Tape is used on meshed membrane joints, sealed overlaps, protrusions, local repairs and areas where the plaster or render key must be carried across the joint. It can also be used with Platon Plaster Base Membrane, a unique non-meshed membrane where the membrane’s undercut dovetail stud profile is designed to provide a physical key for plaster, render or adhesive-fixed plasterboard.

Plasterable Membrane Tape For Sealed Internal Finishes
Platon Mesh Tape is a specialist self-adhesive membrane tape designed for use where waterproof or damp proof membranes will receive a direct plaster or render finish. In these systems, the membrane joint must be sealed securely, but it must also provide a surface that allows the finishing material to bond properly across the seam. Platon Mesh Tape achieves this by combining a butyl rubber backing with a textured polypropylene fleece face. The butyl backing provides adhesion to the membrane and helps seal the joint, while the fleece surface provides the key required for plaster and render to grip over the joint area.
Textured Fleece Key For Reliable Plaster And Render Adhesion
The fleece face is the key feature that separates Platon Mesh Tape from plain butyl sealing tapes such as Platon Sealing Tape or Platon Corner Strip Tape. Plain butyl tapes are designed to seal, but they do not provide a surface suitable for direct plastering or rendering. Platon Mesh Tape is used where the joint must be integrated into the finished internal wall surface, helping reduce weak points where plaster or render could crack, debond or fail over the seam. It is primarily intended for meshed membranes, like Platon PB2 Mesh, where the fleece surface works with the membrane face to provide a continuous finishing key across the joint.
100mm Tape For Meshed And Plaster Base Membrane Details
Platon Mesh Tape is supplied in 100mm wide x 10m long rolls, providing suitable coverage across membrane joints and detailing areas. It is commonly used over butted joints between adjoining meshed membrane sheets (i.e Platon PB2 Mesh Membrane), helping seal the joint while allowing the fleece face to carry plaster or render across the seam. It can also be used as an overtape where a joint has already been sealed with Platon Sealing Tape, Platon Sealing Rope or Platon Corner Strip Tape, reinstating a suitable finishing key above the sealed detail. It is also suitable for use with Platon Plaster Base Membrane, a non-meshed membrane with undercut dovetail-shaped studs designed to provide a physical key for plaster, render or plasterboard on adhesive dabs.

Product Benefits
-
Seals And Bridges Membrane Joints: Platon Mesh Tape helps seal butted joints between adjoining membrane sheets while bridging the seam with a fleece surface that allows plaster or render to continue across the joint.
-
Textured Fleece Surface For Plaster And Render: The polypropylene fleece face provides a suitable key for direct plaster or render finishes, helping the finishing material grip across the joint instead of being applied over a smooth butyl surface.
-
Self-Adhesive Butyl Backing: The butyl backing bonds directly to clean, dry membrane surfaces, helping create a secure seal without the need for a separate adhesive during normal membrane jointing and detailing work.
-
Suitable For Platon Meshed Membrane Systems: Designed for use within Platon waterproofing and damp proofing systems where meshed membranes (i.e Platon PB2 Mesh) are installed in internal areas that will receive a plaster or render finish.
-
Compatible With Platon Plaster Base Membrane: Platon Mesh Tape can also be used on butted joints of Platon Plaster Base Membrane, where the membrane’s dovetail stud profile provides a physical key for plaster, render or adhesive-fixed plasterboard.
-
Useful As An Overtape: The tape can be applied over joints already sealed with Platon Sealing Tape, Platon Sealing Rope or Platon Corner Strip Tape, reinstating a plasterable or renderable surface above the waterproof sealing detail.
-
Helps Reduce Weak Finishing Points: By carrying the plaster or render key across membrane joints, the tape helps reduce the risk of cracking, debonding or visible weakness where the finish passes over a seam.
-
Practical 100mm Wide Format: The 100mm width gives good coverage across joints and detailing areas, allowing the tape to bridge the seam while leaving enough contact area on each side for a secure bond.
Typical Applications
-
Meshed Membrane Jointing: Platon Mesh Tape is used over butted joints between adjoining meshed membrane sheets, helping seal the joint while maintaining a plasterable or renderable surface across the seam.
-
Platon Damp Proofing Systems: Suitable for internal damp proofing systems where Platon membranes, such as Platon PB2 Mesh, are fixed to walls and finished directly with plaster or render over the membrane face.
-
Platon Waterproof Membrane Installations: Used within Platon waterproof membrane systems where meshed membrane joints require both a sealed connection and a continued surface key for the internal finish.
-
Platon Plaster Base Membrane Joints: Suitable for joining butted sections of Platon Plaster Base Membrane, where the tape helps treat the seam while working with the dovetail stud surface used for plaster, render or adhesive-fixed plasterboard.
-
Overtaping Sealed Joints: Applied over joints already sealed with Platon Sealing Tape, Platon Sealing Rope or Platon Corner Strip Tape to provide a suitable textured face for plaster or render.
-
Sealing Around Protrusions: Used around pipes, services, brackets and other protrusions through the membrane where the joint needs sealing and the surface key needs to continue around the detail.
-
Local Membrane Repairs: Suitable for repairing surface damage, cuts or disturbed mesh areas on compatible membranes before plaster or render is applied.
-
Failed Or Poor Fixing Plug Areas: Can be used where a fixing plug has failed to locate securely or where the membrane surface has been disrupted and needs to be sealed and prepared for a plaster or render finish.
Q) What is Platon Mesh Tape used for?
A) Platon Mesh Tape is used to seal membrane joints while providing a plasterable or renderable surface across the joint area. It is a self-adhesive sealing tape with a butyl backing and a textured polypropylene fleece face. The butyl backing bonds to the membrane and helps seal the joint, while the fleece face stays exposed so plaster or render can key into it correctly. This makes Platon Mesh Tape especially useful on meshed membrane systems where the wall finish is applied directly over the membrane. It is commonly used over butted joints, sealed overlaps, protrusions, repairs and areas where the finishing key needs to continue across the seam.
Q) How does Platon Mesh Tape work?
A) Platon Mesh Tape works by combining a sealing layer with a finish-ready surface. The self-adhesive butyl backing bonds to clean, dry membrane surfaces, helping seal the joint or repair area beneath it. The exposed polypropylene fleece face then provides the textured key needed for plaster or render to bond over the joint. This is important because smooth butyl tapes can seal effectively, but they do not offer a suitable surface for direct plastering or rendering. Platon Mesh Tape allows the joint to be sealed while also being incorporated into the finished wall build-up, helping reduce the risk of cracking, weak spots or poor adhesion over membrane seams.
Q) Where should Platon Mesh Tape be used?
A) Platon Mesh Tape should be used where a Platon membrane joint or detail needs both sealing and a plaster or render key. Typical uses include butted joints between meshed membrane sheets, sealed overlaps, protrusions, local repairs, disrupted mesh areas and failed or poor fixing plug areas. It is also suitable where joints have already been sealed with Platon Sealing Tape, Platon Sealing Rope or Platon Corner Strip Tape, but still need a textured face for the final finish. Platon Mesh Tape is mainly used within Platon waterproofing and damp proofing systems where the membrane will be finished directly with plaster, render or a compatible internal coating system.
Q) Can Platon Mesh Tape be used with Platon Plaster Base Membrane?
A) Yes, Platon Mesh Tape can be used with Platon Plaster Base Membrane, particularly on butted joints or detailed areas where the seam needs to be treated before finishing. Platon Plaster Base is a non-meshed membrane, but it has a unique undercut dovetail-shaped stud profile designed to provide a physical key for plaster, render or adhesive-fixed plasterboard. Platon Mesh Tape helps bridge and seal joints while working with the membrane’s keyed surface to support the finish across the seam. It is especially useful where a joint, repair or local disruption needs a more consistent finishing surface before plaster, render or plasterboard adhesive is applied over the membrane.
Q) How do you apply Platon Mesh Tape?
A) Platon Mesh Tape should be applied to clean, dry membrane surfaces. The tape is positioned over the joint, repair or detailing area, then pressed firmly so the self-adhesive butyl backing bonds properly to the membrane. It should bridge the seam with enough contact area on both sides to create a secure seal and stable finishing surface. The fleece face must remain exposed, as this is the part that provides the plaster or render key. Avoid applying the tape over dust, moisture, loose debris or poorly seated membrane sections, as this can reduce adhesion. Once the joints are taped, the plaster, render or compatible finish can be applied over the fleece surface.
Q) Can Platon Mesh Tape be used over Platon Sealing Tape or Corner Strip Tape?
A) Yes, Platon Mesh Tape can be used as an overtape above joints or details that have already been sealed with Platon Sealing Tape, Platon Sealing Rope or Platon Corner Strip Tape. This is useful because those products provide waterproof sealing, but they do not provide a surface suitable for direct plastering or rendering. Platon Mesh Tape reinstates the textured surface key over the sealed area, allowing the finish to bond more reliably across the joint. This approach is especially important on meshed membrane installations where a plaster or render coat must continue smoothly over seams, junctions and detailed areas without leaving weak finishing points.
Q) What size is Platon Mesh Tape supplied in?
A) Platon Mesh Tape is supplied in 100mm wide x 10m long rolls. The 100mm width gives suitable coverage across joints and detailing areas, allowing the tape to bridge the seam while still leaving enough contact area on each side for the butyl backing to bond securely. This format is practical for butted joints between adjoining membrane sheets, sealed overlaps, local repairs, protrusions and areas where the plaster or render key needs to be restored. The 10m roll length is useful for both planned membrane jointing and smaller remedial details. Correct positioning is important, as the tape should cover the joint evenly and leave the fleece face exposed for finishing.
Q) What are the main limitations of Platon Mesh Tape?
A) Platon Mesh Tape should not be treated as a universal replacement for all Platon sealing tapes. Its main purpose is to seal and restore a plasterable or renderable surface key over meshed membrane joints, Platon Plaster Base joints and detailed repair areas. For internal waterproof lap joints, Platon Sealing Tape or Platon Sealing Rope may still be needed underneath, with Platon Mesh Tape used above to provide the finishing key. The tape must be applied to clean, dry surfaces and pressed firmly into place, otherwise adhesion may be reduced. It is also important that the fleece face remains exposed, as covering or contaminating it can affect plaster or render bond.
