Once cured, Silirub AQ is completely inert and non-toxic, making it safe for use in aquaria populated by fish and other aquatic organisms.
Silirub AQ has been specifically developed for use on rigid glass surfaces. The substrate must be structurally sound and should comply with recognised standards for aquarium construction, particularly DIN 32622 for aquaria up to a maximum of 200cm x 60cm x 60cm.
The product adheres exceptionally well to clean, dry, dust- and grease-free glass without the need for any pre-treatment or primer. While Silirub AQ is designed for glass-to-glass bonding, a preliminary adhesion test is recommended when working with unfamiliar surfaces or assemblies.
All surfaces to be bonded must be clean, dry and free of dust, grease, oil, or other contaminants. Use a lint-free cloth and a suitable degreasing agent if necessary to remove any residues from the glass prior to application.
It is essential that all surfaces are fully dry to ensure proper adhesion. The glass edges must be carefully aligned, and sufficient reinforcement should be included to avoid flexing or movement during curing, which could compromise bond strength.
Silirub AQ should be applied using a caulking gun. Apply the silicone directly from the cartridge, ensuring a minimum bond thickness of 1mm is achieved. Apply the sealant evenly and smoothly along the entire bonding surface.
Once applied, finish the joint with a soapy solution to prevent surface skinning, and use a suitable smoothing tool such as a spatula to achieve a neat finish. The silicone should be allowed to cure fully before subjecting the joint to water or mechanical stress.
Never fill the aquarium or terrarium until the product has fully cured. Depending on ambient conditions such as temperature and humidity, full curing may take several days.
To accelerate curing, place a container of warm water inside the aquarium to increase humidity. Once curing is complete, rinse the interior of the tank with pure water to remove any residual acetic acid.
Coverage will depend on the size and number of joints, but typically a single 300 ml cartridge will yield approximately 10 to 12 linear metres of 5mm x 5mm bead.
Ensure that the finished bond line maintains the recommended minimum thickness of 1mm after curing.
Please refer to our Guide on How To Measure The Number of Tubes Required For the Job.
Silirub AQ cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture. The curing time depends on the thickness of the silicone layer, ambient temperature, and relative humidity.
A skin typically forms within 10 to 20 minutes, with a full cure occurring at a rate of approximately 2 to 3mm per 24 hours under normal conditions (23°C and 50% RH).
Full cure of thicker sections and seams may require several days.
Uncured silicone can be removed immediately using Soudal Swipex Cleaning Wipes or Soudal Silicone Remover Gel. Once cured, the sealant can only be removed mechanically.
Clean tools and equipment immediately after use. Avoid contamination of surrounding surfaces during application and clean up any spills promptly.
Silirub AQ complies with the requirements of DIN 32622 point 4.4.2.1 and meets LEED and SCAQMD Rule 1168 guidelines for low-emitting adhesives and sealants. It is not suitable for use on natural stone such as marble or granite, as it may cause staining.
The product should not be applied in direct contact with other reactive sealants unless the first sealant has fully cured. Aquaria constructed with Silirub AQ must be appropriately supported and must not be subjected to movement, pressure or water loading until the product has reached full cure.
Protect the bonded surfaces from shock and vibration throughout the curing period to ensure a strong, bubble-free seal.
