Platinum Building Chemicals Ltd | Damp Proofing
DampSolve™40 is a High Strength (40% Active) Damp Proofing Cream used for Remedial Rising Damp Treatments. The cream is injected into holes drilled along the mortar bed using an appropriate applicator gun or pressure pump.
Once installed, DampSolve™40 Damp Proofing Cream effectively migrates into the masonry pores and fully passivates across the mortar joint as the cream reverts to a liquid phase.
Upon curing, a hydrophobic chemical damp-proof barrier is formed in-situ. Extensive field experience with this technology demonstrates that DampSolve™40 will perform as well as any conventional liquid injection system against rising damp.
DampSolve™40 damp proofing cream is designed to control rising damp, but walls can remain damp after a DPC installation where they are severely contaminated with hydroscopic salts.
Re-plastering with an appropriate, salt resistant product, such as Renovating Plaster or a sand / cement mix containing a suitable Render Additive (Renderproof), is essential to prevent further damage to the plaster finish.
In all cases the damp proof course should, as far as possible, be installed in accordance with British Standard ‘Code of Practice for Installation of Chemical Damp Proof Courses’ BS6576:2005.

Check and overhaul rainwater goods to ensure they are clean and in good working order. Repair or install drains to carry away surface water.
If internal floors are below external ground level, form trenches along the external face of the walls to at least 150 mm below the proposed DPC level (where foundation depth allows). If this approach is not feasible the DPC must be placed at 150 mm above external ground level and the internal walls tanked below the DPC to prevent lateral migration of moisture/ salts.
Remove skirtings, fixings and render / plaster to expose the line of the proposed DPC (mortar bed). Internal plaster affected by hydroscopic salts is removed from the area to be treated to a height of 300mm above the maximum level of the Rising Damp.
Check flooring timbers for signs of fungal decay and recommend repair / replacement as appropriate.
Ensure wall cavities are cleared of debris.
Walls vary in thickness and type of construction so it is essential these factors are taken into account before deciding on an appropriate drilling pattern. DPC height should always be at least 150mm above external ground level. In the case of solid floors, insert the DPC as close to floor level as possible.
Vertical DPCs should be provided to connect horizontal DPCs where ground levels change and to isolate untreated wall areas (adjoining properties, garden walls etc.) In most cases solid brick walls may be drilled and injected from one side only.
For cavity walls each leaf may be dealt with as a separate 115mm thick wall.
Alternatively, if preferred, drill through the selected mortar course, across the cavity, then drill the outer leaf of brickwork to a depth of 95mm and inject in one continuous process (the physical properties of DampSolve™40 ensure the cream remains in contact with the surrounding mortar even when the mortar bed is drilled through in this way). Always ensure that the cavity is clear before treatment.
In random stone and rubble infill walls, as far as practically possible, follow the mortar course at the appropriate level. However, if the stone is of a porous type, it may be possible to vary the drilling locations (mortar / stone) as long as the mortar bed perpends are treated. In walls of a thickness greater than 350mm, it is recommended that drilling is undertaken from both sides at a corresponding height. In the case of drill holes becoming blocked these should be re-drilled just prior to injection or a new hole should be drilled nearby to ensure that an adequate volume of DampSolve™40 is introduced.
Drill 12mm diameter holes horizontally in the mortar bed at distances no greater than 120 mm. The depth of the hole required for various sizes of wall is shown in the table below (approx 90% of any given wall thickness).
For walls of intermediate thickness the depth of holes should be pro-rata. Where the masonry is irregular, ensure the horizontal drilling pattern targets the base of all perpends of the course selected.

DampSolve™40 - 1 Litre Cartridge: Applied by use of the Cox™ Powerflow DPC Cartridge Gun & Brass Injection Nozzle.
DampSolve™40 - 5 Litre 'Bag in a Box': Applied by use of the Osatu Tango 7 DPC Injection Pump.
Insert DampSolve™40 Cartridge into gun applicator (Or pour contents into Injection Pump if using the 5 Litre Box).
Insert the applicator nozzle into the full depth of the pre-drilled hole. Squeeze the trigger and back fill each hole fully with DampSolve™40 cream to within one centimetre of the surface. When treating cavity walls from one side make certain that the holes in each leaf are filled. Spilt material should be wiped up immediately and the wipes disposed of appropriately. Contaminated surfaces should be washed immediately with warm soapy water. If DampSolve™40 cream penetrates non-target surfaces (e.g. a patio slab) it will normally dry clear to finish. However, if staining arises consult our Technical Department for further advice.
Individual site conditions can cause variations. Always allow at least 10% extra when estimating the quantity of material required.
On external faces of walls, drill holes can be re-pointed using a matched mortar or can be plugged with DPC Injection Plugs (Available in a variety of colours).
On internal faces holes can be left open and plaster stopped short of the DPC.
Final cure takes 2 - 6 weeks depending on the thickness of the wall.
The removal and replacement of internal salt contaminated plaster is an important part of an effective damp-proof course. Salts left behind by rising damp are hygroscopic and can cause future staining independent of any issues with structural dampness.
It is therefore essential to follow specific re-plastering guidelines drawn up for dealing with the particular challenges posed by damp / salt-affected surfaces.
It is advisable to leave walls injected with DampSolve™40 to dry for as long as possible, and for at least 14 days, before removing excess salts and commencing re-plastering.
It should be noted that whilst insertion of a chemical DPC inhibits further moisture from rising up into the wall, the moisture present before the DPC will take time to dry out.
A damp wall takes time to dry out. As a general guide, the drying rate is given as 1 month for every 25mm of wall thickness (BRE Digest 163, ‘Drying out buildings’). Thus 230mm will take approximately 9 months to dry. However, the drying processes depend on conditions, ventilation and the type of masonry, so drying may take considerably longer.
Due to the potential prolonged drying of the wall, the following must be considered:
Delay any decoration for 4-6 weeks following re-plastering and allow for good natural ventilation to enhance drying. Do not apply heat or accelerated drying methods.
Do not use wallpaper for at least 12 months (longer on thick walls).
Redecorate using a non vinyl based emulsion.
Maintain good ventilation around walls.
Note: The initial decorations should be regarded as temporary, the final decorations not taking place for at least 12 months after completion of the damp proofing and ancillary work.
DampSeal DPM Paint is a highly advanced Styrene Butadiene Latex-based liquid-applied damp proof membrane.
DampSeal DPM Paint offers a simple method for many water proofing and vapour proofing applications.
The product supplied is a viscous liquid of similar consistency to thick emulsion paint.
Available in 5 Litre or 10 Litre Containers in either White or Black colours.
The colours will differ slightly on application from the colour of the dried membrane / paint. The damp proof membrane dries to a tough semi-gloss finish.
DampSeal DPM painthas been independently tested and found to be an effective guard against CO² and Radon Gas. The advantages include:

The background surface should be smooth or have a light even texture. Any masonry should be flush pointed and defects in existing surfaces made good.
The surface needs to be clean, sound and free from dust, loose material or free surface water. DampSeal DPM paint should not be applied in wet conditions or where these conditions are likely to occur before the membrane has dried.
DampSeal DPM paint should not be applied when the temperature of the background, or the air temperature, is below 7°c.
It sometimes advantageous to pre-wet concrete or masonry backgrounds, so that these are damp but free from any water glistening on the surface.
Because of the wide variety of background types and site conditions it is always advisable to check adhesion to the background by testing on a sample area before starting any job.
DampSeal DPM can be applied by brush or roller and is effective in the following situations.
FLOORS: Under screeds (or above screeds) to provide a damp proof membrane.
BASEMENTS: As part of a waterproofing system beneath ground level. NOT suitable where hydrostatic water pressure is present.
WALLS: Can be used under render or plaster as a water barrier or vapour barrier.
TILING: As a secondary protection under tiles in wet areas e.g. bathrooms, food processing areas, balconies, etc.
SILAGE STORAGE: The membrane protects concrete from silage attack.
GAS BARRIER: To minimise CO² / Radon transmission.
DampSeal DPM paint may be applied by brush, roller or airless spray. If necessary the compound can be diluted with up to 10% water, however care should be taken to ensure that the correct dry coat thickness is applied.
The thickness of the dried DPM per coat depends on the method of application.
For a single dry coat thickness of more than 0.30mm it is recommended that DampSeal DPM is applied by airless spray. If airless spray is used single dry coat thickness’s of up to 1.0mm can be obtained.
Note: A single coat of 0.60mm dry thickness or more will require a greater drying time than for an equivalent multi-coat application.
If two coats are being applied it is recommended that the coats be applied at right angles to each other.
Before applying the second coat it is necessary to let the first coat become touch dry. The time required to reach this tough dry condition will vary according to site conditions but will typically be in the order of 1 hour. It is preferable if the second coat is applied within 24 hours of applying the first coat.
After all coats have been applied DampSeal DPM paint should be left for at least 4 days before attempting any ponding tests. Under unfavourable drying conditions this period may need to be extended.
Whilst most applications to concrete roofs have been successful, blistering shortly after application of DampSeal DPM paint to the roof has occasionally occurred.
This blistering is caused by the heat from the sun causing a vapour pressure build up below the membrane.
The problem is exacerbated if the background concrete is wet.
The risk of blistering can be minimised by ensuring a very good bond to the background and avoiding application of DampSeal DPM in, or shortly prior to, strong sunlight.
Techniques for maximising bonding are:
Vigorously brushing the first coat into the background concrete using a stiff bristled broom.
Priming the roof with a slurry of SBR Bonding Agent and Ordinary Portland Cement. Allow this primer coat to harden for at least 2 days before applying DampSeal DPM.
In some situations e.g. at high stress points such as wall / floor junctions and construction joints it is advised to use Platinum Mesh Tape to provide strength and to reduce cracking.
The fabric is rolled onto the first wet coat and then coated with additional DampSeal DPM after allowing the first coat to dry to a tacky condition.
A minimum dried coating thickness of 0.6mm is necessary to provide a vapour barrier.
This should be applied in a minimum of two coats. (i.e. 0.3mm dry film thickness per coat for two application).
For the final dried membrane thickness to be 0.60mm a coverage rate of 1.20kg/m² is required (this is the total for all coats). This corresponds to approximately 1 Kg/m². A 5kg Bucket will cover Approximately 5m² based on 2 Coats

Single coat application
AquaSolve-Pro Masonry Protection Cream should be applied to dry, porous surfaces. It should not be applied over sealed or painted surfaces and is intended for above ground use only.
Apply when rain is not forecast for the next 24 hours.
For the treatment to be successful it is necessary to check all joint and roof connections.
Hairline cracks up to 0.3 mm can be ‘bridged’ by AquaSolve-Pro Masonry Protection Cream, however, it may be necessary to fill wider cracks in brick / stonework and re-point using a suitable cement or lime based mortar.
After any re-pointing work it is advisable to wait 7 - 14 days for the mortar to cure before application of AquaSolve-Pro Masonry Protection Cream.
Dirty surfaces should be cleaned before the application of AquaSolve-Pro Masonry Protection Cream to the recommendations given in BS 8221-1:2000, (Code of practice for cleaning and surface repair of buildings. Cleaning of natural stones, brick, terracotta and concrete.)
Remove any loose mortar, dust etc., using a masonry brush.
When biological growth such as moss, algae or lichen needs to be removed, apply one of our Masonry Biocide Products in accordance with instructions.
Application to structures containing high levels of salt should be avoided.
AquaSolve-Pro Masonry Protection Cream has been formulated to be colourless once cured.
Slight darkening may occur when it is applied to some substrates, which will usually fade over time.
It is recommended that a small test area is treated before full application begins.
Apply by brush, roller or spray. Larger areas can be covered more quickly using roller application.
Details such as around windows are best covered by brush. Care should be taken to ensure that AquaSolve-Pro Masonry Protection Cream does not splash onto glass, paintwork, plants, etc. Any splashes should be cleaned away with warm soapy water.
AquaSolve-Pro Masonry Protection Cream appears white immediately after treatment – making it easy to tell which areas have been treated.
After 15 - 20 minutes from application, AquaSolve-Pro Masonry Protection Cream starts to penetrate into the masonry and the whiteness will fade.
After 24 - 48 hours the wall will have returned to its original appearance.
As AquaSolve-Pro Masonry Protection Cream is formulated to penetrate deeply into masonry it can take up to two months for a noticeable 'beading effect' to appear when rainfall strikes the wall.
The masonry will be resistant to light rain after 2 - 4 hours.
Approx 5 m² per litre, however this can be greatly reduced depending of the porosity of the substrate. Single coat application.

Flat and Pitched Roofs
Whilst minimal preparations are required, the surface must be sound and free of loose or friable materials.
To obtain the best result remove all surface debris and surface water using a stiff broom.
Repairs to cracks, holes etc, must be carried out prior to coating.
Fungus, mould and lichens must be removed, additional protection against fungal spores can be achieved by applying Moss and Algae Cleaner.
Oil or grease must be removed prior to application.
Any existing coating must be inspected and adhesion tests carried out.
Apply by brush. In extreme cases, a second coat may be applied 2-3 days after initial application.
Cromapol is easily applied using a brush or roller.
Treat all details first, in areas where excessive movement may occur additional reinforcement can be incorporated into the coating.
Cromapol can be applied in one coat, but experience has shown that a two coat application ensures a greater uniformity of coating thickness.
Cromapol requires no primer on most surfaces but where air borne pollution is heavy a coat of Bitumen Primer may be necessary. It is therefore good practice to carry out adhesion tests prior to application of the coating.
Cromapol will tolerate damp surfaces although with any application for best results apply to a dry surface if possible.
Approx 1 - 2kg per m² on average.
Platinum Salt Neutraliser is an aqueous solution that has been specifically developed to overcome the problem of salts in a wide range of substrates from new plasterwork to old stone.
Due to rising dampness, salts contained in ground water are absorbed into the masonry and subsequently into the plaster coat. If the rising damp had been severe the plasterwork can lose key and visual evidence of this problem can often be noted by the presence of salt deposits.
In such severe circumstances the plasterwork must be removed and re-plastering carried out in accordance with an appropriate re-plastering specification which will prevent any residual salts in the base substrate migrating into new plasterwork.
There are, however many situations where the type of salts within the masonry are such that the plasterwork remains in good condition. In these cases the Salt Neutraliser can be used thus saving considerable time and expense by not having to re-plaster these areas.
There are many other occasions where even after re-plastering work, salt efflorescence can be seen on the new plasterwork. This often leads to concern that the damp proof course has failed, when in fact, in them, majority of cases the efflorescence is due to other factors such as drying out, salts in construction, plumbing or rainwater leaks, condensation or salty bricks. Under these circumstances Salt Neutraliser is an ideal product to treat the problem.

Neutralises the action of salts to prevent or reduce efflorescence.
Applicable to all internal mineral building surfaces.

Thoroughly soak the affected area with clean tap water.
Apply Salt Neutraliser by brush or roller to areas showing salts contamination. Under most circumstances one coat or application will be adequate.a) Where heavy salting on old brickwork is being treated use Salt Neutraliser as the concentrate (container strength).b) On new plasterwork or light salting use Salt Neutraliser diluted with water up to 50/50 dilution rate.
Some frothing may occur which is due to the reaction with the salts. Allow some time for the neutralising action to be completed. A white deposit may be left on the surface where original efflorescing has taken place and is sometimes difficult to remove.
If re-decorating is to be applied on the treated surface the area should be washed with water and allowed to dry. Do not redecorate at any time until the treated areas are thoroughly dry.
Coverage will vary with the type of surface and substrate: 1 litre concentrate should treat 5m² to 10m².
ACS | Woodworm & Dry Rot Treatment

Disodium Octoborate Tetrahydrate 100% w/w
All bats are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Before treating any structure used by bats, consult English Nature (etc).
Before deciding on an appropriate preservative treatment, carefully evaluate the structural integrity of timbers and / or replace those considered unsound (isolating from masonry where possible). Locate and rectify sources of moisture and improve ventilation as appropriate.
Dilute Borotreat 10P Powder 1:9 with clean tap water to give a 10% active working solution. In some cases as a superficial treatment against Dry Rot (Anobium Punctatum) apply a 4% solution at 4m²/litre.
Borotreat 10P is supplied in convenient pack sizes of 0.5kg and 2.5kg bags to make 5 Litres or 25 Litres of diluted product respectively.
Use an oversized bucket or container with the appropriate volume of clean tap water and add the corresponding amount of powder concentrate.
Mix the powder into the water with a suitable paddle during addition and continue until it has completely dissolved. Use warm water if possible to help the powder to dissolve.
The working solution of Borotreat 10P can be applied by brush, spray or injection.
Clean all wooden surfaces using a brush or vacuum cleaner.
Cover electrical installations, water tanks, stored goods and isolate adjacent areas not requiring treatment.
Lift floorboards as required and clean out debris.
Treat all accessible areas with the working solution of Borotreat 10P using brush or spray.
Under normal circumstances one coat will be sufficient but ensure that all accessible wood surfaces are thoroughly wetted out. Any surfaces that absorb solution rapidly should be sprayed again at the time.
Apply a second coat after one to eight hours where there is a severe fungal attack or woodworm infestation.
Note: Borotreat 10P needs to be applied to absorbent timber. Any paint, varnish or stain must be removed prior to application. Polished surfaces must be cleaned back to bare timber.
Borotreat 10P can be used to treat bat roosts as a single component product (i.e. no additional active ingredients are used) at the following rates:
Maximum suitable application rate (ml per square metre of timber surface) for products containing single active ingredients.
By Brush: 1 Litre per 6 - 8m² using a 10% solution.

There is no adhesion on glass, PE, PP, PTFE (Teflon®) and bituminous substrates.
We recommend a preliminary compatibility test.

Porous surfaces in water loaded applications should be primed with Soudal Primer 150.
Smooth surfaces should be degreased before bonding them together. We recommend a preliminary adhesion test on every surface.
While producing plastics very often releasing agents, processing aids and other protective agents (like protection foil) are used. These should be removed prior to bonding.
NOTE: Bonding plastics like PMMA (e.g. Plexi® glass), polycarbonate (e.g. Makrolon® or Lexan®) in stress loaded applications can give rise to stress cracking and crazing in these substrates. The use of Fix All® Crystal is not recommended in these applications.
There is no adhesion on PE, PP, PTFE (Teflon®) and bituminous substrates. We recommend a preliminary compatibility test.
Application: With manual or pneumatic Caulking Gun.
Cleaning: With Sealant Remover immediately after use. Cured Fix-All® can only be removed mechanically.
Finishing: With a soapy solution or Soudal Finishing Solution before skinning.

Fix All® Crystal is paintable with water-based paints, however due to the large number of paints and varnishes available we strongly suggest a compatibility test before application.
The drying time of alkyd resin based paints may increase.
Fix All® Crystal can be applied to a wide variety of substrates. Due to the fact that specific substrates such as plastics, like polycarbonate, etc, may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, we recommend preliminary compatibility test.
Fix All® Crystal is not suitable for expansion joints.
Do not use in applications where continuous water immersion is possible.
Fix All® Crystal has a good UV resistance but can discolour under extreme conditions or after very long UV exposure.
Fix All® Crystal can not be used as a glazing sealant.
Not suitable for bonding aquariums.
Fix All® Crystal cannot be used on natural stone. Because the adhesion surface will discolour under influence of the sealant (looks wet) and because this is visible through the crystal clear sealant it seems like staining has occurred.
The sanitary formula should not replace regular cleaning of the joint. Excessive contamination, deposits or soap remainings will stimulate the development of fungi.
Isola | Waterproofing Membranes
Platon® P8 Cavity Drain Membrane is manufactured from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for use within System Platon®, Isola's internally applied Waterproofing System that includes the Aqua Channel Drainage System and Aqua Pumping Systems.
Platon® P8 impermeable and resistant to the usual chemicals in the building construction. Studs are formed in a regular pattern on the one face of the product. The studs are spaced at approx. 25mm centres in both directions.
Platon® P8 is CE marked in accordance with EN 13967 and EN 13984. A separate declaration gives values for several characteristics.
Platon® P8 membrane is tough but pliable and can be bent round corners and projections without risk of breaking, even in very low temperatures. The product can be easily cut with a knife or scissors.
Platon® P8 is supported by BBA Certification Certificate Number 01/3823.
Available in various Roll sizes ranging from 10M² to 40M².
Platon® Cavity Drain Membrane can be applied to almost all sound building structures below ground, which are affected by dampness or water ingress. However, they are not recommended for installation in the following situations.
Where the Cavity Membrane System cannot be drained, otherwise the system will fail.
Fixed onto internal flat soffits unless the soffit has an existing fall or a fall can be formed at the design stage (in the case of new build construction) or created using sand & cement renders, otherwise water would pond behind the membrane and build up like a balloon. The weight of water would inevitably burst the membrane seals, which are not designed to hold water under pressure.
Under or on top of concrete/stone staircase treads and risers, because of the many convoluting junctions and angle details. In such circumstances, we recommend they be treated independently using an epoxy vapour barrier.
Platon® Cavity Drain Membranes are capable of dealing with (quite) large volumes of water, so ingressing water will not usually require remedial action. But if the flow rate is such that it will be able to carry silts/dissolved lime with it, then this inflow should be stemmed/controlled prior to fitting the membrane. This can be achieved as follows.
If ingressing water is localised then the application of Water-Stop Plugging Compound will often be sufficient.
If ingressing water is more general and cannot be dealt with by localised plugging, consideration should be given to applying a general coat of 3:1 render incorporating an accelerator in the mix.
When water is flowing through concrete or mortar (particularly when it is new) there is a tendency for dissolved lime to be brought into the cavity.
This lime can then come out of solution and block up cavities and drains. If this is a risk, then the source of water ingress needs to be treated in the same way as silt bearing water, as described above.
NB: Regardless of conditions at the time of inspection, BS 8102 says it must be assumed hydrostatic pressure is going to occur at some time during the lifetime of the basement. This means that some form of water removal system must always be fitted with a Platon® Cavity Membrane in below ground structures.
There are two principle forms of drainage, these are natural (gravity) and mechanical (sump & pump) and can be used in conjunction with falls or drainage channels.
However, when assessing the type of drainage facility to be used and because the drainage is the key to the success of the cavity membrane system, it is important to take into consideration the following points.
Where drainage with gravity is feasible within the bounds of the property or at a point of exit from the property, it is most important to establish that the ‘internal drainage’ is in good working order and to question whether the local drains are connected to public drains or a soakaway.
Drains can and do block up or back up causing flooding, including escape of foul waste and pungent smells.
Soakaways can also fill up during periods of heavy rain, which would lead to flooding and failure of the cavity membrane system.
In situations where the Platon® membrane installer finds that the only possibility of draining the cavity membrane is into a foul / soakaway system or his client so instructs, liability for the waterproofing system should therefore be excluded in the event of blockage of the foul pipes or the soakaways filling up. We, and the products Manufacturer, always recommend the inclusion of sump and pumps.
Platinum Chemicals offer an off-the-shelf sump and pump drainage system, ‘The Aqua Pump Range’ and ‘Aqua Pump Pro Range’ which has been specifically designed for the purpose of controlling ground water ingress.
The simple to fit sump pump kit comprises a polyethylene pre-formed sump chamber with a structural lid. The submersible Aqua Pump is controlled by an automatic integral float switch and comes with a non-return valve and a high level water alarm that warns of mechanical or power failure.
However, it would be prudent to install a double pump system ‘The Aqua Pump Plus Kit’ which consists of two pumps in the sump chamber. This secondary pump would provide a back up in case of mechanical failure of the principal pump.
Consideration should also be given to installing a Battery Back-up Pump in case of a power failure and is also available from Platinum Chemicals.
Platinum Chemicals also offer Triton® Aqua Channel, which is a PVC drainage conduit specifically designed for the control of water ingress in below ground situations.
It is fitted around the perimeter of the floor at the vulnerable wall / floor junction and can be used in most waterproofing situations, and is particularly suited for use in conjunction with Platon® Cavity Drain Membrane Systems.
Water entering the building through the walls is controlled behind the Platon® Membrane and diverted to the Aqua Channel at the base of the wall. The water enters the Aqua Channel through pre-drilled drainage holes and must then be diverted to a suitable drainage point, either natural or a sump and mechanical pump. Rodding Eyes can also be incorporated into the Aqua Channel.
It is essential that there are no undulating surfaces or depressions in the floor. In new build or whenever floors are being replaced, the floor slabs can be designed and constructed to falls 2º or 3º towards the water collection facility, i.e. sump chamber.
Where an existing solid floor is to be retained a sand/cement screed can be laid over the entire floor gently sloping towards the sump. In all cases the floor should always be tested by spraying with a hose, to ensure that all water finds its way to the water collection point before laying the cavity membrane.
Note: Wherever possible (head height permitting) we recommend that Platon® P20 be used on floors. This is because the Platon® P20 Membrane has a far greater drainage capacity and significantly reduces the risk of hydrostatic pressure building up within the cavity.
Consideration must be given to the implications of fitting sumps in the ground, e.g. where unstable elements are present, such as chalk or sand.
The installation of a perforated sump chamber could cause washing away and potential undermining. Therefore, in such cases, only sealed sumps should be installed and structurally held in place by concrete etc, with the water collection limited to that entering from the drainage channels.
The final decision on the sump type in cases where ground conditions are unknown should be delayed until excavation is undertaken.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If there is any concern as to whether there is a risk of de watering the ground to a condition whereby the structure as a whole could or may be undermined, then advice should be sought from a chartered engineer.
If the Aqua Channel cannot be formed / inserted into the floor at the wall/floor junction, because there are in-situ reinforcing bars in the slab.
Then either a fall must be created in the floor (as previously described under the heading falls) or a series of small surface channels (cut into the floor like chevrons) must be formed with a fall towards the direction of the sump/water collection chamber.
Plaster that may be affected by being closed in behind the Platon® Cavity Membrane, such as gypsum or lightweight plaster, or where the existing plaster is loose or de-bonding, should be removed from walls / soffits prior to membrane application.
Only where dense and well adhered sand and cement renders are present and where removal may cause unwanted structural damage to substrates can they be left in place.
One of the benefits of using cavity drain membrane is that in general, very little preparation to the substrates is required and although the cavity membrane is flexible and does not need a perfect surface for application, the following points need to be considered.
Unsound materials on the surface like renders or plasters need to be removed. Any organic materials such as wallpaper, timber skirtings, fixing grounds etc need to be removed.
A specialist Timber Treatment contractor should investigate any fungal decay / infestations in timbers. Also timber that is in contact with damp masonry should be removed or physically isolated.
Excessively uneven wall and floor surfaces should be dubbed out/levelled especially if timber battens are to be fixed to support dry lining board. Where a wooden floor finish is required such as T&G flooring grade chipboard, it must also be borne in mind that the membrane will follow the contours of the floor. Therefore to achieve a flat surface, any depressions or undulations must be ironed out to avoid undue movement in the floor finishes.
Substrates must be free of sharp protruding objects and debris etc that can damage the membrane. We would also recommend that where mould, mosses, lichens and algae has affected substrates, a surface sterilisation with TRISOL 23 should be used.
Loose, friable or defective masonry should be repaired to ensure a solid fixing.
New concrete should be treated with Platinum Lime Inhibitor which prevents free lime from the curing concrete being drawn out by ingressing water.
Set out below is a generic method of installation, which can be used to apply Platon® Cavity Drain Membranes continuously between wall and floor.
NB it is assumed by this stage, that the site and design considerations mentioned earlier in this document, have been assessed and the type of drainage facility chosen has been tested.
The installation of Platon® P8 Membrane can be fixed to walls either vertically or horizontally, but when choosing the method of application, consideration should be given to the height of walls in relation to the size of the roll of membrane.
There are fewer joints in horizontal applications but it can be awkward and difficult to manoeuvre the weight of a full roll of membrane. Particularly in situations where the membrane has to be taken in and out of numerous recesses, also around convoluting junctions or were walls are not square.
Vertical application may have more joints and require more Waterseal Tape, but this method is more manageable and much easier to fix.
Platon® P8 Membrane is fixed to walls with Brick Plugs & Sealing Washers. This will form a seal with the membrane when the plug is driven home into the substrate.
If the ceiling height is constant, measure and cut drops of the membrane to completely cover the wall areas to be treated. Place the membrane against the wall as level as possible by eye sight and in the top right or left hand corner (depending on which way around the room the membrane is being taken) drill a hole through the centre of the membrane stud using a 10mm drill bit.
Insert the brick plug and hammer home the plug till it finishes flush with the membrane.
Using a spirit level, level out the membrane and then drill and fix another Brick Plug in the same manner approximately 1.5M along the top of the sheet and along the same line of stud as the first fixing.
Offer up the next length of membrane and position the flange over the studs of the first sheet and fix with two Brick Plugs at high level as previously described.
Continue on in this manner, ensuring the membrane stays as level as possible until all the walls are covered. These independent membrane drops will relax after a while and hang flatter to the wall. The drops are now ready for the next step.
Thoroughly clean the flange and the studs where the seal is to be made, (the best cleaning material is Paper Towel). Any dust or dirt will compromise the integrity of the sealed joint. If the membrane is covered in plaster or brick dust, wash off with clean fresh water only and allow to dry. DO NOT use soap or detergents, as these will leave traces on the membrane, which may affect the seal at a later date or make sealing more difficult.
The separate membrane drops should now be sealed together using Waterseal Tape. Apply the tape to the stud area below, which the flange will cover and press home onto the area between the studs.
Flick over the flange section to cover the tape line, and check for uniformity of cover on tape line. Remove the tape backing paper, starting from the middle section of the wall drop, forming two backing paper tags, one going up and the other down.
On the exposed section of tape apply hand pressure only to the flange to form an initial seal. Carry on to form the seal from the centre section of membrane working up to the top, then go back to the centre and repeat the operation going downwards.
Sealing in this manner will prevent any buckling between the membrane or stress concentration at the joint. In very cold or humid conditions a hot air gun can be used to obtain a good sealed joint.
Now that the membrane is sealed to form one continuous sheet, Brick Plugs can now be fixed through the membrane in position to accommodate the chosen dry lining system.
NOTE: Although a 10mm Drill Bit is the correct size to use, in very soft brickwork this can result in loose fixing. In these circumstances, it is useful to have on hand drill sizes down to 8mm Drill Bit and experiment with different sizes for the best results.
Begin at one side of the room and unroll the Floor Membrane against the Wall Membrane with the studs facing down onto the floor.
Allow for the membrane flange overlap, cut the membrane to the desired length or width of the floor. Repeat this exercise until all the lengths / widths required to cover the floor area have been cut.
Roll out the next length/sheet of membrane and position the flange over the studs of the first sheet laid and thoroughly clean the flange and the studs where the seal is to be made as previously described for wall application.
Apply Waterseal Tape to the stud area below which the flange will cover and press home onto the area between the studs.
Flick over the flange section to cover the tape line, and check for uniformity of cover on tape line. Remove the tape backing paper, starting from the middle section of the membrane sheet, and peel off backing paper in opposite directions along the flange. On the exposed section of tape apply hand pressure only to the flange to form an initial seal. Carry on forming the seal working away from the centre of the membrane.
Foot pressure can be applied by sliding the sole of the foot over the membrane joint, to ensure that the membranes are fully bonded. Sealing in this manner will prevent any buckling between the membrane or stress concentration at the joint.
In very cold or humid conditions a hot air gun can be used to obtain a good sealed joint.
The next stage of the operation is to link the floor membrane to the wall membrane, which can be achieved, using Corner Strip / Overtape. Using the Overtape, work out how many linear metres there are around the walls, the Overtape is supplied in manageable 5M, 10M or 20M Lengths.
The Overtape is folded in half along the length of the piece to be used and positioned with the crease into the angle as described for the wall / floor junction.
Once correctly aligned, carefully pull off the backing paper and press firmly out with the palm of the hand onto the floor and wall membranes.
Platon® P8 should not be fixed to the under side of a flat soffit unless a fall exists or a fall can be created in the soffit itself.
The soffit should first be measured to establish the desired lengths or widths of membrane required to cover the area and then a further 200mm of membrane should be added to the measurements, to allow for the membrane to be lapped down all the peripheral walls.
Apply Waterseal Rope to Brick Plugs, then around the perimeter edges of the membrane, fold the membrane inward 200mm to form a positive creased and create a down lap. Offer the membrane up to the soffit and position the down lap creases into the junction between the soffit and wall.
Drill and fix enough Brick Plugs through the membrane and into the soffit to hold the membrane in place with the studs against the soffit.
NB: Wherever the soffit membrane meets the wall, a 200mm down lap must be allowed and formed as above.
Offer the next length/sheet of membrane up to the soffit and position the flange over the studs of the first sheet, fix and secure the membrane as described above. Repeat this operation until all the membrane sheets are held in place.
Thoroughly clean the flange and the studs where the seal is to be made as previously described for wall application.
Apply Waterseal Tape to the stud area, which the flange will cover and press home onto the area between the studs. The membrane should now be sealed to form one continuous sheet, Brick Plugs can now be fixed through the membrane, in positions to accommodate the chosen dry lining system.
NOTE: It is important to ensure that the membrane is taut against the soffit and doesn’t sag, otherwise water ponding will occur and the membrane/seals could fail.
Internal and external corners are formed in exactly the same way as that which has been previously described in ‘Floor Applications' using Platon® P8 with membrane upstand except in this case, they will be formed in reverse and be upside down.
Where there are services such as pipes, ducting or steel stanchion that protrude through walls or floors, the membrane should be carefully cut and trimmed around the obstacle and sealed using a combination of Waterseal Rope or Newton Mastic and Corner Strip.
Door and Window Frames and timber surrounds should always be removed to enable the Platon® Membrane to be extended around or into door and window reveals to maintain the continuity of the waterproofing system and to also provide a physical barrier between the frames and damp masonry.
In situations where the Platon® Membrane would restrict or limit the profile of replaced frames, then Plain DPC can be used to line and protect the reveals instead.
There is no requirement to ventilate the membrane cavity in a fully sealed system such as in under pavement vault application.
In a semi sealed system, the cavity between membrane and substrate can be vented into the room space with passive vents or if this is not possible, it can be vented through the external wall using a 150 x 225 air brick inserted every 1.5M to 2.0M along the wall.
It is important that the cavity between the membrane and internal finish i.e. dry lining is not vented so as to avoid possible interstitial condensation. However, consideration should be given to the risk of condensation forming within the room itself and the introduction of a humidistat controlled extract fan should therefore be recommended.
Refer to BS8102 (2009) Table 2 for further reference. Part F of Building Regulations concerning ventilation in basements.
If timber battens are to be used, the traditional method is to fix a vertical batten 25mm x 50mm.
The Brick Plugs in this instance should be fixed at 400mm centres horizontally and 600mm centres vertically. Platinum Brick Plugs will take 25mm of screw, so be sure to purchase the correct length for the thickness of batten.
NB: We would however, recommend that foil back plasterboard be used to prevent interstitial condensation forming in the cavity.
For a metal fast track dry lining system such as Gypliner or Lafarge, the brick plugs should be fixed at 600mm centres horizontally and 800mm centres vertically. If an independent timber or metal frame system is to be used, the wall membrane can be ‘curtain hung’. The membrane is simply dressed down the walls just like hanging a curtain or sheet. This method of installation requires less fixings.
NOTE: We would however, recommend that foil back plasterboard be used to prevent interstitial condensation forming in the cavity.
There is a wide choice of floor coverings that can be laid on top of Platon® floor membranes
Domestic: Minimum 50mm screed or 20mm reinforced polymer modified self-levelling screed.
Industrial: Minimum 75mm reinforced screed or 35mm reinforced polymer modified self-levelling screed.
For Platon® Membrane applied to walls at or above ground level, the maximum insulation thickness should be 50mm.
When Platon® membrane is applied to earth retaining walls full height of a basement, there is no upper limit to insulation thickness. However, if Platon® Membrane is applied to part earth retaining walls, then the maximum insulation thickness should be 50mm.
There is no upper limit to insulation thickness for Platon® Membrane applied to solid floors at ground or below ground level.
When working in a conventional vault with rounded ceilings the water can run off freely and the following method should be adopted:
When lining vaults always work from the front to the back, starting on the centre line of the vault. Measure the length of the vault and add 400mm to this measurement, then cut the membrane to the length.
Form a 900 downturn crease 200mm in from either end of the membrane and prepare the Brick Plugs by wrapping with Waterseal Rope.
Offer the membrane up to the vault ceiling along the centre line of the vault, and drill and hammer home the fixing plugs in a straight line at 600mm centres from front to rear. These will provide fixing points for the dry lining system.
The creased downturn at either end of the vault will start to deform going into the curvature of the vault ceiling. Where this occurs, carefully slit / cut the deformed sections towards the crease but stop short of the crease by one stud.
The membrane can now be overlaid and will flatten out and follow the curvature. Several slits may be required to achieve this depending on the radius of the vault.
Continue to work out from the first sheet, ensuring a weathered joint of not less than eight studs. The flange should be used to make both of these weathered joints either side of the initial membrane fixed off the central line of the vault.
The weathered joints are sealed flange over stud using Waterseal Tape.
All the sheets running from front to back of the vault are cut overall length of vaulted soffit. This should give coverage to the vault, past the springing line down to the floor slab line, together with a 200mm return to either end of the vault.
The end walls are now ready to be lined with the membrane. The end wall sections are cut to the true width of the vault so that the membrane overlaps the membrane returns already formed. These sections of membrane are fixed and sealed in exactly the same way as described for wall application. The end wall membrane stud to stud joint should be sealed around the radius with Waterseal Rope and if necessary Corner Strip / Overtape.
The floor membrane is now ready to be laid over the completed drainage system.

Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh is a composite damp proofing membrane comprising of HDPE membrane with a rot-proof HDPE mesh heat-welded during the manufacturing process to the surface of one side. The meshed surface creates a mechanical key to allow the membrane to be plastered, rendered or to receive dot & dab plasterboard.
Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh is 0.5mm thick and has a pattern of raised 3mm studs. The studs face the wall and create air channels that allow for vapour equalisation to take place between the membrane and the wall.
Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh is light, clean and easy to handle. It can be cut with a sharp knife, scissors or shears. The membrane is inert and is highly resistant to water, alkalies, saline solutions and organic acids, and it is not affected by minerals. It is also resistant to bacteria, fungi and other small organisms.
Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh is guaranteed against deterioration for 30 years and has a life expectancy of at least 50 years.

Clean the substrate to remove all loose debris and organic matter. Plaster should be removed as it can soften over time, which will weaken the fix of the membrane to the wall. If the wall render is in good condition, it does not have to be removed and the Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh can be fitted directly over. If the render is damaged, local repairs may be required
Loose or crumbling render should be removed and local repairs made. If the render is in very poor condition, all of it may need to be removed
Obtain as flat a surface as possible. If the wall is undulating, better results are produced if the wall surface is dubbed-out flat with sand & cement prior to installation of the membrane, rather than dubbing out over the top of Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh. A flat, uniform surface to the substrate means that the plaster or render above Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh will also be uniform and less likely to have cracking caused by differential thicknesses
If evidence of bacterial growth can be seen, use a fungicidal product prior to the fitting of the membrane
If any evidence of wet rot or dry rot is seen, have it dealt with by a qualified remedial specialist
If a new slab is to be laid as part of the works, it is preferable to fit Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh prior to the laying of the floor slab with the floor DPM extending upwards in front of the Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh ready for the concrete pour.

Joints may be made horizontally or vertically
Joints are created by butt jointing the two edges together and then oversealing the joints with Platinum Mesh Tape.
Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh can be taken round corners. On particularly difficult shaped corners, cut the Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh and butt joint and seal as above.
Platinum Mesh Tape should be firmly pressed into the mesh of the Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh to facilitate the joint.
In cold and damp conditions a heat gun should be used to gently evaporate surface moisture and then to assist in pressing the Mesh Tape into the mesh of the membrane
Where the membrane has to be cut around pipes or other protrusions, carefully cut the membrane around the protrusion and then seal around the protrusion with Newton® Sealing Mastic to ensure there is no bridging between the damp substrate and the new finish.
Cut the membrane to size. Ideally, Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh should be continued up into ceiling voids and down past the slab to the oversite. If this is not possible, cut the membrane so that it finishes tightly to the soffit and floor finish. A gap is not required at the soffit or floor, indeed the system works more efficiently when the system is not ventilated as this impedes the natural vapour drive from inside the property to the outside that still continues through the Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh.
Platinum DM3 Pro-Mesh is fitted to the wall with the studs facing the wall and the flat meshed surface facing inwards towards the applicator. Fix the membrane to the wall with the Platinum Plaster Plugs to all substrates except when fixing to plywood or timber, when a galvanised clout nail should be used, or to slightly friable mortar substrate, when the Platinum Cob Plug should be used.
