Boron Woodworm Treatments are based on water-soluble borate, a timber preservative that has been extensively researched over the last 50 years and provides effective treatment against woodworm and other wood-boring insects.
The products in the Wykabor and N-Virobor range are also formulated for use against fungal decay (dry rot, wet rot).
Compared with other woodworm treatments, borates have the distinct advantage of exhibiting superb penetration into damp timber. Hence they can be used in high-risk areas such as embedded joist ends, lintels, wall plates, etc...
The benefits of using Boron woodworm treatment products are well recognised by architects and those in the building restoration industry. They are often specified on high-profile, prestigious projects where re-treatment is not an option.
In many situations, the high performance of Wykabor and N-Virobor products may allow ordinal timbers to be retained that would otherwise have had to be replaced. This is obviously an advantage when treating historic buildings.
N-Virol Specialist Products | Woodworm & Dry Rot Treatment
N-ViroBor 10 Woodworm Treatment is an aqueous wood preservative based on Disodium Octaborate and Benzalkonium Chloride.
N- Virobor 10 is suitable for woodworm treatment, eradicating the common furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum) and other wood boring insects in building timbers.
N-ViroBor 10 Woodworm Treatment can be used for the prevention of fungal decay in sound timbers following the removal of sources of moisture.
N-ViroBor 10 Woodworm Treatment may also be used in conjunction with Wykabor 20.1 Gel and Wykabor 40.1 Paste as part of an eradicant treatment against fungal decay.
N-Virobor 10 carries the HSE Approval No 8473.

All bats are protected under The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Before treating any structure used by bats, consult English Nature, Scottish National Heritage, The Countryside Council for Wales or The Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland.
Ensure that all timbers to be treated adequately exposed and cleaned, (vacuum cleaning preferred). Any paint or varnish finishes or any severely damaged sapwood edges of timbers (‘frass’) should be removed prior to treatment where possible.
Remove thermal insulation in roof spaces (or roll up and completely cover) and do not reinstate until timbers are dry.
Cover fitted insulation (lagging on pipes) with polythene and cover water storage tanks with heavy grade polythene to be left in-situ after treatment.
Isolate electrical circuits in the treatment area during and for 8 hours after treatment and ensure that junction boxes etc. are adequately protected against the ingress of the fluid. Remove or cover all food-stuff before application as well as fish tanks / bowls.
Do not apply to surfaces on which food is prepared or stored.
Where applicable, notify occupants of adjoining properties before treatments commence.
Display Safety Notices conspicuously during treatment and leave on site after treatment for at least 48 hours.
Same as (Beetle Infestations) above plus - locate and rectify the source of dampness.
Cut out all structurally unsound timbers and make repairs isolating timbers where possible from damp masonry etc. and ensuring adequate ventilation.

This treatment should be carried out annually on exterior decking and teak / wood furniture to prevent slime, mould, algae, insect and wood rot attack.
Wash to remove all dirt and previous coatings. Allow the surface to dry until just damp. Apply a single coat of N-ViroBor 10 by brush or spray until the surface is visible.
Allow the surface to dry out until just damp again. Then apply a second coat of N-ViroBor 10.
By Brush / Spray: 1 litre per 4m² of wood or masonry surface.

Wykabor 10.1 can be applied to timbers by brush or coarse spray (low pressure; 210-350 kPa, 30-50 lbs/in²) or by immersion (minimum 3 minute dip) to achieve the coverage rates noted below.
During spray application some respiratory / face protection will normally be required.
In the case of timber sub-floor areas, the base of the structural walls, sleeper walls and oversite (solum) should be treated with Wykabor 10.1. If dry rot mycelium has spread beneath a concrete floor or into subsoil it should be excavated and replaced following a suitable surface treatment .
Provide adequate ventilation following treatments and maintain as long as possible after re-occupation.
Please note that any metallic surfaces (such as copper pipes) should be isolated from the treatment area as the boron salts may cause a chemical reaction causing surface pitting of the metal.

Before deciding on an appropriate preservative treatment, carefully evaluate the structural integrity of timbers and / or replace those considered unsound (isolating from masonry where possible). Locate and rectify sources of moisture and improve ventilation as appropriate.
Dilute Borotreat 10P Powder 1:9 with clean tap water to give a 10% active working solution. In some cases as a superficial treatment against Dry Rot (Anobium Punctatum) apply a 4% solution at 4m²/litre.
Borotreat 10P is supplied in convenient pack sizes of 0.5kg and 2.5kg bags to make 5 Litres or 25 Litres of diluted product respectively.
Use an oversized bucket or container with the appropriate volume of clean tap water and add the corresponding amount of powder concentrate.
Mix the powder into the water with a suitable paddle during addition and continue until it has completely dissolved. Use warm water if possible to help the powder to dissolve.
The working solution of Borotreat 10P can be applied by brush, spray or injection.
Clean all wooden surfaces using a brush or vacuum cleaner.
Cover electrical installations, water tanks, stored goods and isolate adjacent areas not requiring treatment.
Lift floorboards as required and clean out debris.
Treat all accessible areas with the working solution of Borotreat 10P using brush or spray.
Under normal circumstances one coat will be sufficient but ensure that all accessible wood surfaces are thoroughly wetted out. Any surfaces that absorb solution rapidly should be sprayed again at the time.
Apply a second coat after one to eight hours where there is a severe fungal attack or woodworm infestation.
Note: Borotreat 10P needs to be applied to absorbent timber. Any paint, varnish or stain must be removed prior to application. Polished surfaces must be cleaned back to bare timber.
Borotreat 10P can be used to treat bat roosts as a single component product (i.e. no additional active ingredients are used) at the following rates:

Wykabor 20.1 Gel leaves no surface residues after treatment, is non-staining and can be over painted in time.

To aid brushing out on any timbers which are very dry or remain dusty, apply a little water to the surface before the application of Wykabor 20.1 Gel.
Apply a generous brush coat of Wykabor 20.1 Gel, taking care to ensure that end grains, corners and joints are well treated. Brush apply to any surfaces exposed by cutting after initial treatment.
Brush the Wykabor 20.1 Gel well into the surface taking care not to overload the brush with product, particularly on overhead, horizontal faces.
Wykabor 20.1 Gel may be used in outdoor conditions provided that the timber treated is then protected from weathering by an appropriate coating or sealant.
As a surface application the gel will not penetrate through paint, varnishes or other coatings and these should be removed before treatment. Wykabor 20.1 Gel can be injected through predrilled holes in areas where paint and coatings cannot be removed.
Clean all tools, brushes and equipment with water
By Brush: 1 litre to 2m² - 2.5m² of timber surface. Large dimensional timbers may need more than one coat or additional treatment with Wykabor 20.1 Gel.

Wykabor 40.1 is a glycol-based wood preservative formulation containing disodium octaborate tetrahydrate.
Wykabor 40.1 is designed for use by injection into larger dimension timbers, to protect against wood boring insects and fungal decay.
It is particularly suited for use in damp / wet timbers in contact with masonry (e.g. joist ends, wall plates etc.) where the active ingredients can diffuse into ‘high risk’ areas.
Treatments may be supplemented by a surface application of Wykabor 10.1.

Wykabor 40.1 can be used to treat sound (new or existing) timbers. For timbers already suffering from fungal decay / insect attack, treatments can be applied effectively as long as measures are also taken to remove sources of moisture and / or improve ventilation in the adjoining areas.
Timbers left in direct contact with masonry below ground level, or in other situations where there is a known continuing source of moisture, can be treated in-situ but should be re-inspected periodically to access their condition.
Cover water storage tanks and remove or cover fish tanks and bowls and any food stuffs etc. before application. Do not use on food preparation or storage surfaces.
Wykabor 40.1 is a deeply penetrating product which causes staining to both the treated timber and any porous materials it is contact with (e.g. plaster, masonry).
Further, when timbers are dry, the boron salts may appear as surface crystals in places.
THESE FACTORS MAKE THIS PRODUCT SUITABLE ONLY FOR THE TREATMENT OF STRUCTURAL TIMBERS WHICH WILL NOT BE EXPOSED AS A DECORATIVE FEATURE.
If sensitive linings or overlay materials are to be used in direct contact with treated timbers they should be isolated by the use of an impervious barrier.
If treatments are being carried out as part of a dry rot eradication program carefully establish the full extent of the infestation and use Wykabor 10.1 to sterilise affected masonry as necessary.
Holes of 10-12mm diameter should be drilled at intervals of 100mm along the grain and to within 15mm of the full depth of the timber (and otherwise as per the table below).
Inject the Wykabor 40.1 to within c. 10mm of the face of the timber and seal with timber dowling or Plastic Plugs.
Holes of 10-12mm diameter should be drilled at intervals of 150mm along the grain and to within 30-75mm of the full depth of the timber (see the table below).
Inject the Wykabor 40.1 to within 30mm of the near face and seal with timber dowling or Plastic Plugs.

Provide a physical barrier to prevent unprotected persons and / or animals coming into contact with treated surfaces until dry (inaccessible timbers are considered to be outside this requirement).
Dispose of empty cartridges carefully; transfer old nozzles to new cartridges wherever possible.
Boron Timber Rods are cylindrical implants composed entirely of anhydrous boric oxide. They contain the maximum level of borate preservative available in rod form.
Boron Timber Rods are used as a wood preservative to control wood rotting fungi and wood boring beetles in new and existing structural and joinery timbers.
The preservative is mobilised when exposed to dampness (wood moisture content greater than 35% w/w).
Suitable for use in timbers already at risk of or showing signs of decay (see also Wykabor 10.1 and Wykabor 40.1) or as a preventative treatment in sound dry timbers which may be exposed to wetting in service (e.g. window, door frames).
Note: For full protection against wood boring beetles where the timbers may remain relatively dry in service, and / or protection against fungal decay due to surface wetting which does not mobilise the protective agent in Boron Timber Rods, a surface application of a suitable liquid preservative as an adjunct to rod installation is recommended.

Preservative Power: 1g Boron Timber Rod is equivalent to 1.69g Boric acidequivalents. (The toxicity of boron compounds to insects and fungi depend on the boron content, which is normally expressed in terms of equivalent amounts of boric acid).

Following assessments by a qualified surveyor sound and / or slightly decayed timbers left in contact with masonry or soil below DPC level, or in other situations where there is a continuous source of moisture, may be treated with Boron Timber Rods (possibly together with other Boron Products). However, the full extent of eradication or protection cannot be predicted generally. Re-inspection at least every 5 years is therefore recommended under these circumstances.
Timbers treated with Boron Timber Rods may exhibit surface crystallisation of boric acid under certain circumstance and this should be taken account of when considering their use for the protection of internal (uncoated) decorative timbers.
Boron Timber Rods are compatible with all conventional wood primers and exterior wood coatings, and will have no adverse effects on paint adhesion.
Drill holes in the timbers to be treated approximately 1-2mm greater in diameter and at least 10mm longer than the rod to be used.
The hole should be drilled to a depth not more than 20mm from the rear of each section.
Once inserted (pushed firmly to the bottom of the hole) the rods are sealed in position with a suitable filler or plastic cap / timber dowling.
The number and configuration of the holes / rods will depend on the type and use of timber and the area considered at risk of wetting.
For window frames, in most situations, rods (of a suitable diameter/length) should be inserted at 100mm intervals along the grain (e.g. sills) and at 50mm across the grain.
In vertical elements the first rod should be placed no more than 50mm from any end grain / joints. Overall coverage of ca. 6-7kg Boron Timber Rods per m³ should be achieved in vulnerable areas.
In joists, a similar pattern is recommended but special care should be taken to ensure protection of concealed (built-in) sections in contact with masonry.
The first holes should be as close to the masonry as possible and drilled downwards at an angle to finish not more than 30mm from the joist end.
For fence posts drill a hole at 45° to the groundline to a depth at least equal to 110% of the post diameter (see diagram below) and insert a rod of appropriate size.
It may be considered advantageous to apply Boron Timber Rods in conjunction with Wykabor 40.1 in order to provide a ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ distribution of the preservative material into the surrounding timber (especially if some decay is already established or the wood moisture content at the time of treatment is below 35% w/w).
When desired, paint finishes can be applied to dry timbers surfaces without delay.
