Typical Applications:

  • As a Wood Preservative Treatment against Woodworm and other Wood Boring Insects: ACS Boracol 10 penetrates deep into the timber to target woodworm and other wood-boring insects, protecting your wood from further damage and promoting structural longevity.

  • As a Wood Preservative Treatment against Wood Rotting Fungi (Dry Rot & Wet Rot): The boric acid and benzalkonium chloride work together to eliminate wood rotting fungi, allowing ACS Boracol 10 to preserve the integrity and lifespan of your wood structures.

  • As a Surface Biocide to Eradicate and Inhibit Organic Growth (Algae, Mould, Mosses and Lichen): ACS Boracol 10 not only treats woodworm and wood rot but is also highly effective in eradicating and inhibiting the growth of algae, mould, mosses, and lichen on all types of masonry and brickwork. This surface biocide application ensures a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment, providing added value to homeowners and professionals alike.

Active Ingredients:

Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate (10% w/w):

Disodium octaborate tetrahydrate is a boron-based compound that acts as the main active ingredient in ACS Boracol 10. This compound plays a crucial role in combating woodworm and fungal growth in timber and masonry surfaces. Once applied, disodium octaborate tetrahydrate penetrates deep into the wood and inhibits the growth of wood-boring insects and fungi.

Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate is particularly effective in wood preservation due to its high solubility in water. Once dissolved, this compound becomes readily available for penetration into the wood's cell walls, creating a protective barrier that deters pests and rot-causing fungi.

Benzalkonium Chloride (2-3% w/w):

Benzalkonium Chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound that is primarily used as a surface disinfectant. In ACS Boracol 10, benzalkonium chloride serves as a co-active ingredient, working in conjunction with disodium octaborate tetrahydrate to eradicate wood-rotting fungi and inhibit the growth of organic organisms such as algae, mould, mosses, and lichens on masonry and brick surfaces.

Benzalkonium Chloride works by disrupting the cell membrane of microorganisms, including those that cause rot and decay. It is highly effective in eliminating these microorganisms by breaking down their cell walls, killing them in the process.

Monoethylene Glycol (10-20% w/w):

In ACS Boracol 10, Monoethylene Glycol serves as a fragrance-free solvent to dissolve the active ingredients, making them readily available for penetration into timber and masonry surfaces.

Monoethylene Glycol is an emollient that promotes hydration in wood and masonry surfaces, preventing them from becoming brittle and dry. In addition, it provides a protective coating that prevents the treated surfaces from drying out, further extending their lifespan.

Protection of Bats:

All bats are protected under The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Before treating any structure used by bats, consult English Nature, Scottish National Heritage, The Countryside Council for Wales or The Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland.

Preparation - Beetle Infestations:

Ensure that all timbers to be treated adequately exposed and cleaned, (vacuum cleaning preferred). Any paint or varnish finishes or any severely damaged sapwood edges of timbers (‘frass’) should be removed prior to treatment where possible.

Remove thermal insulation in roof spaces (or roll up and completely cover) and do not reinstate until timbers are dry.

Cover fitted insulation (lagging on pipes) with polythene and cover water storage tanks with heavy grade polythene to be left in-situ after treatment.

Isolate electrical circuits in the treatment area during and for 8 hours after treatment and ensure that junction boxes etc. are adequately protected against the ingress of the fluid. Remove or cover all food-stuff before application as well as fish tanks / bowls.

Do not apply to surfaces on which food is prepared or stored.

Where applicable, notify occupants of adjoining properties before treatments commence.

Display Safety Notices conspicuously during treatment and leave on site after treatment for at least 48 hours.

Preparation - Fungal Decay - Dry Rot / Wet Rot:

Same as (Beetle Infestations) above plus - locate and rectify the source of dampness.

Cut out all structurally unsound timbers and make repairs isolating timbers where possible from damp masonry etc. and ensuring adequate ventilation.

For treatments of decayed timbers in-situ see ACS Ecobor 40 Paste.

Preparation - Organic Growth on Masonry:

Remove any thick layers of organic growth with a suitable brush or scraper.

Some species of lichens are resistant to treatment due to their impervious surface. To optimise the effect of the biocide solution it is advisable to abrade the face of such growths prior to treatment (e.g. by wire brush).

Application Method on Timbers:

Wear suitable protective clothing (coveralls), synthetic rubber/PVC gloves and face protection.

ACS Boracol 10 can be applied to timbers by brush or coarse spray.

During spray application some respiratory / face protection will normally be required.

Under normal circumstances one coat will be sufficient, however ensure that all accessible wood surfaces are thoroughly wetted out. Any surface which rapidly absorbs ACS Boracol 10 should be sprayed again at the time.

In the case of timber sub-floor areas, the base of the structural walls, sleeper walls and oversite (solum) should be treated with ACS Boracol 10.

Apply a second coat of ACS Boracol 10 after one to eight hours where there is severe fungal attack or the presence of House Longhorn beetle (Hylotropes Bajulus).

Provide adequate ventilation following treatments and maintain as long as possible after re-occupation.

Please note that any metallic surfaces (such as copper pipes) should be isolated from the treatment area as the boron salts may cause a chemical reaction causing surface pitting of the metal.

Application Method on Masonry:

Apply ACS Boracol 10 under dry conditions using a coarse spray to saturate the surface. Allow to dry thoroughly and apply a second coat if required.

Apply to refusal as coverage will be governed by the porosity and type of substrate i.e. wood, brickwork, concrete.

ACS Boracol 10 is suitable for application on roofs, walls timbers, paths and patios.

Coverage:

By Brush: 1 litre per 4m² to 8m² of timber surface.

By Spray: 1 litre per 4m² to 6m² of timber surface.

Finishing:

As long as timbers are dry, re-occupation can take place 48 hours after treatments are completed.

Floor coverings should not be laid for at least 72 hours (or longer for certain impermeable or other floor materials, e.g. vinyls, foam-backed carpets etc.) In all cases, use lining papers to protect coverings from direct contact with timbers.

Treated timbers can be over coated when dry with a range of decorative / protective paints etc. (to ensure compatibility check a small area first).
